Yankees bow in title contest

Medina Journal-Register — The Medina Teachers’ Association Yankees fell to the Middleport Mariners by a score of 13-7 in the Mini-league championship game in Hartland Park on Tuesday night.

The Yankees opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with Brian Fry starting the game with a lead off single. Nate Sherman followed with a double to score Fry. Sherman was knocked in by Drew Fuller’s single to stake the Yankees to a 2-0 lead. The Mariners responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the first with three hits, one walk and two errors.

The Yankees and the Mariners were both held scoreless in the second inning with Benny Beam recording two strike outs for the Yankees.

The Yankees tacked on two more runs in the top of the third with Joe Gates walking and then knocked home by a Fry double. Sherman walked and was then plated by a Nick Dingman single after surviving a hotbox between third and home. The Mariners scored three more runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 8-4. Beam recoded one strike out before giving way to Sherman for the final two outs.

The Yankees were again held scoreless in the top of the fourth inning while the Mariners scored once more to increase their lead to 9-4. Sherman recorded three strike outs in the inning while giving up a walk and a single.

Caleb Boyce lead off the fifth inning for the Yankees with a single and scored on a Fry double. Fry was knocked in with a Sherman double to pull the Yankees to 9-6. Sherman struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the fifth but the Mariners followed that with a runner reaching on an error, two base hits and a walk to score four runs. Fry came on to get the final out of the inning.

The Yankees could only manage one more run in the top of the sixth inning. Dingman lead off with a single and then was knocked in with a Fuller triple. The Mariners then shut the door and ended the game with a 13-7 victory and the Mini-League championship.
