Purple Eagle netters return good nucleus

Medina Journal-Register — ALBION - Despite the loss to gradation of all three singles players, Albion returns a good nucleus as the Purple Eagles prep for the Niagara-Orleans League tennis season which begins next week.

Seniors Joyce LaLonde and Alan Quintana and junior Humza Quinn, who were all regulars at doubles spots last spring, head Albion’s veteran contingent. LaLonde earned All-League honorable mention.

The Purple Eagles veteran group also includes juniors Ben Kirby and Andrew Burroughs along with sophomores Dyre Benjovski and Kyler McQuillan.

“It’s an experienced group,” said coach Jay Kovaleski. “I’m very optimistic we’re going to play well and challenge other teams in order to reach our fullest potential.”

Albion, which went 6-6 in N-O competition, will have to replace the graduated singles trio of Jeff Rice, Alex Barleben and Mike Slick. Rice earned first team All-League honors and Barleben was a second team selection.

The Purple Eagles are scheduled to host Akron at 4:30 p.m. next Thursday in the N-O opener.
