Medina Journal-Register — Last spring Albion scored a clean sweep on the Niagara-Orleans League diamonds capturing both the baseball and softball championships.

Now the Purple Eagles are set to begin defense of those titles, today in softball and tomorrow in baseball, both at home against Akron.

The Albion softball squad is led by the senior infield duo of Sarah Papponetti and Halle Jurs, who both earned first team All-League honors last year, along with senior outfielder Tanisha Moyer and freshman catcher/pitcher Kelsee Soule, who were both second team honorees.

The Purple Eagles veterans also include senior outfielders Ali O’Hearn, Jessica Grimes and Erika Edwards.

Albion claimed the N-O crown with a 12-2 record last spring. Roy-Hart finished a game off the pace at 11-3 and the Lady Rams return their line-up virtually intact looking to make another strong run at the title.

The battery of senior pitcher Brianna Walker and junior catcher Sam Brown, both both earned first team All-League honorees, head that veteran group which also includes second team All-League selections, sophomore infielders Hannah Rausch and Ashley Bower, along with honorable mention pick sophomore pitcher/outfielder Taylor Fry.

Medina, which is looking to rebound from last spring’s 3-11 N-O record, is led by senior infielder Stormi Kruger, a first team All-League selection, and senior outfielder Olivia Hermann, a second team honoree.

The Mustangs also return varsity experience in seniors Kelsey Evoy (catcher/outfield), Emma Fish (catcher/pitcher/infield), Jen Molisani (infield/outfield), Arden Zavitz (outfield) and Abriel Bloom (infield/outfield).

In addition to the Akron at Albion game, today’s opening slate will have CSAT at Medina and Barker at Newfane.

The Albion baseball squad, which lost seven regulars to graduation, is led by the veteran quartet of senior pitcher/infielder Chris Reed), senior pitcher/shortstop John Page, junior catcher John Warne and junior pitcher/outfielder Connor Barleben. Warne was a second team All-League selection last year and Reed earned honorable mention.

The Purple Eagles also return varsity experience in the senior trio of Jack Narburgh (outfield), Ed Narburgh (infield/catcher) and Tyiler Neilans (outfield/infield).

Albion posted a 13-1 record last spring to win the N-O title by two games over runner-up Roy-Hart (11-3) which returns a veteran laden nucleus with which to make a strong title run.

Senior pitcher/infielder Judd Jamieson, who earned first eam All-League honors, heads Roy-Hart’s veteran group which also includes sophomore catcher Josh Baptiste, senior first baseman Blake Copella, freshman shortstop Andy Xapsos, senior pitcher Ryan Farewell, junior outfielder Evan Conley, junior outfielder Austin Heschke and senior outfielder Nick Morse.

Medina, which is looking to improve upon last year’s 6-8 N-O record, is led by six varsity veterans including seniors Dan Barnes (infield/pitcher), Tyler Colonna (infield/pitcher), Jake Cotriss (outfield/pitcher), Zach Newton (first base) and Dustin Wells (outfield/pitcher) along with junior Adam Hoot (pitcher/first base).

In early non league action the Mustangs have also had plenty of contributions from sophomores Jason Hellwig (pitcher/catcher), Josh Scroger (outfield/pitcher), Matt Riemer (pitcher/infield) and junior Sam Crowley (infield).

In addition to the Akron at Albion game, Tusday’s opening schedule will have CSAT at Medina and Newfane at Barker. Roy-Hart will open at home Friday against CSAT.
