Medina Journal-Register — Moving on top to stay with three quick first inning runs, Medina went on to edge past CSAT 5-3 Tuesday at rainy Vets Park in the Niagara-Orleans League baseball opener.
Albion likewise opened defense of its N-O title with a rainy 10-3 victory over visiting Akron.
Run producing doubles by winning pitcher Jason Hellwig and Adam Hoot got Medina rolling in the first inning. Zach Newton followed up with an RBI single quickly upping the Mustangs advantage to 3-0 over the visiting Eagles.
CSAT did cut the deficit to 3-2 with pair of runs in the third inning on an error, a wild pitch and a single but the Eagles could get no closer.
Medina got one of those runs back in the fourth on a single by Dan Barnes and an error. The Mustangs later tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a single by Jake Cotriss and an error to make it 5-2.
Defensively, Hoot made a nice diving stop for the final out in the fourth inning s CSAT left the tying run stranded at third.
CSAT got the bases loaded in the seventh on two walks and a hit batsman but managed to score only one run. Medina got out of the jam as the Eagles left two runners stranded. Matt Riemer made a nifty stop at third base for the second out.
Hellwig went the distance on the mound allowing only one hit and striking out six.
At the plate, Hoot , Hellwig and Dustin Wells each finished with two hits. Wells’ hits included a triple.
Medina is next slated to host Akron at 4:45 p.m. Friday.
Albion 10, Akron 3
ALBION - Four-run scoring bursts in both the first and third innings powered Albion past Akron 10-3.
John Krieger tripled in one run in the first inning which also included a double by John Warne, a single by Chris Reed ad a sacrifice by Noah Preston.
