Medina falls in league opener vs. Newfane

HS GIRLS BB: Albion squeaks past CSAT

MEDINA —

MEDINA — After struggling through a season-opening non-league slate, the young Medina girls basketball team looked to open Niagara-Orleans League play in strong fashion.

The result may have not been a victory, but the Lady Mustangs hung tough in a season-opening 49-30 home loss to league rival Newfane on Tuesday night. Freshman Molley Gross led Medina with nine points, while junior Nicole Blount had eight, and senior Taylor Miller added six.

Katie Kneeland led the Lady Panthers with 12 points and 11 rebounds, as Newfane took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 23-13 at halftime. The Lady Panthers used a 13-0 run in the second quarter to take command of the game, aided by the strong play of Bailey Koithan, who finished with eight points on the evening.

Sophomore De'Andrea Salone hit a three-pointer for the Lady Mustangs, finishing with five points on the evening.

Medina falls to 0-1 in league play, 0-4 overall, while Newfane improves to 1-1 in the league after a narrow loss to Barker last week.

Medina returns to action Friday evening, for a home contest against Roy-Hart.

Albion 58, CSAT 54

BUFFALO — It was a back-and-forth battle between the two league rivals on Tuesday evening, and the contest went down to the final few minutes.

The lead changed hands five times in the fourth quarter, but Albion was able to squeeze out a 58-54 victory in a Niagara-Orleans League contest. Albion improves to 1-0 in league play, while CSAT falls to 0-1.

Albion coach credited freshman Chanyce Powell for hitting two clutch free throws down the stretch, as well as junior Justice Nauden, who drove to the hoop to set up a crucial three-point play in the game's closing minutes,

Nauden led the Lady Purple Eagles with 24 points on the evening, while fellow junior Sarah Metzler added 19. Powell finished with five points.
