Medina falls in league opener vs. Newfane

HS GIRLS BB: Albion squeaks past CSAT

MEDINA — After struggling through a season-opening non-league slate, the young Medina girls basketball team looked to open Niagara-Orleans League play in strong fashion.

The result may have not been a victory, but the Lady Mustangs hung tough in a season-opening 49-30 home loss to league rival Newfane on Tuesday night. Freshman Molley Gross led Medina with nine points, while junior Nicole Blount had eight, and senior Taylor Miller added six.

Katie Kneeland led the Lady Panthers with 12 points and 11 rebounds, as Newfane took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 23-13 at halftime. The Lady Panthers used a 13-0 run in the second quarter to take command of the game, aided by the strong play of Bailey Koithan, who finished with eight points on the evening.

Sophomore De'Andrea Salone hit a three-pointer for the Lady Mustangs, finishing with five points on the evening. 

Medina falls to 0-1 in league play, 0-4 overall, while Newfane improves to 1-1 in the league after a narrow loss to Barker last week.

Medina returns to action Friday evening, for a home contest against Roy-Hart.

Albion 58, CSAT 54

BUFFALO — It was a back-and-forth battle between the two league rivals on Tuesday evening, and the contest went down to the final few minutes.

The lead changed hands five times in the fourth quarter, but Albion was able to squeeze out a 58-54 victory in a Niagara-Orleans League contest. Albion improves to 1-0 in league play, while CSAT falls to 0-1.

Albion coach credited freshman Chanyce Powell for hitting two clutch free throws down the stretch, as well as junior Justice Nauden, who drove to the hoop to set up a crucial three-point play in the game's closing minutes,

Nauden led the Lady Purple Eagles with 24 points on the evening, while fellow junior Sarah Metzler added 19. Powell finished with five points.

CSAT was led by Malasia Sullivan, who totaled 22 points in the contest.

"It was a tight game," Albion head coach Lucian Price said. "Both teams played hard; it was within two points for most of the fourth quarter, and it was a good game."

Albion led 15-14 after the first quarter, 28-26 at halftime and 40-39 after the third quarter.

Akron 46, Roy-Hart 24

MIDDLEPORT — Senior Tobie Adams led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, including three three-pointers, as Akron cruised to victory at Roy-Hart in a Niagara-Orleans League contest on Tuesday night.

Senior Gina Henley added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Tigers, who improve to 1-0 in league play, 3-1 overall. Roy-Hart drops to 0-2 in the league, 1-4 overall.

Junior Kendra Hill led Roy-Hart with seven points, including a three-pointer, while junior Taylor Fry added six points and senior Morgan Jones added four.

Akron took a 13-4 advantage after the first quarter, extended it to 26-10 at the intermission and never looked back.

Roy-Hart returns to action on Friday, traveling to Medina for a league contest.
