MEDINA —

Here’s what’s going on at the Orleans County YMCA in Medina, with results and analysis courtesy of the Y staff. This week, Avanti’s emerged victorious as champion of the popular Adult Floor Hockey league.

This week, the Y’s most intense and talked-about league came to an end. The semifinals took place Friday with four teams remaining — Team RamRod, Avanti’s, Drum Oil and Canal Country Artisans. In the first matchup, No. 1 seed Drum Oil took on No. 4 seed Team RamRod.

It was a thrilling matchup, a true barn-burner from the start. Trevor Powers led his team to victory over the undefeated Drum Oil team. CJ Castricone added stellar defense for RamRod, deftly poke-checking away various advances. A jubilant RamRod team closed out the narrow 4-3 victory through a rough-and-tumble third period.

The next game was No. 2 seed Avanti’s taking on No. 3 seed Canal Country Artisans. The intensity in this game made the prior nail-biter look like child’s play. Both teams went back and forth until the final whistle. With three seconds left on the clock and down by one, Canal Country’s Tim Demmer trickled in the game-tying goal to send the contest into overtime.

Avanti’s, with their backs against the wall against the younger Canal Country team, stormed out in overtime and tallied a quick game-winner.

The next day, Avanti’s took on Team RamRod in one of the great games of this hockey season. Avanti’s, trying to avoid a fourth consecutive loss in the finals, roared out to a quick 4-0 first period lead. They took the lead 4-0 with goals from Jeff and Matt Page. In the second period, RamRod showed its resilient nature, tallying two quick goals to make it 4-2, with a blast from Trevor Powers making a statement.

The start of the third period saw Avanti’s rip off a quick CJ Lindsay goal, but RamRod fought back with another goal. In the third period, the teams went blow for blow, but Avanti’s was just too much for RamRod as they finally captured the championship by a score of 6-3.

Congrats to team captain Eric Offermann and the rest of Avanti’s. Thanks to everyone that played this season.
Due to gym construction, the next YMCA leagues will not resume until the week of Feb. 10.
