This Week at Shelridge: Open champs crowned

Medina Journal-Register — Shelridge turf boss Brad Balschmiter and his crew stepped into the spotlight again just a week ago when they brought back life to a drenched and soggy golf course and permitted the club’s major event to go on.

The Second Annual Shelridge Open was waiting in the wings when a Friday night storm poured an inch and a half of rain on the course in bursts with wind and lightning. It was the climax of a super hot and humid week and the week end forecast was promising. But Friday night the grass was soaked, sand bunkers were full of water and good sized tree limbs littered the expanse. The rescue effort was hard work, but Saturday’s tee-off went as scheduled and golfers enjoyed a great week end.

Even the tournament produced a special adventure when Sunday’s final day produced a tie and a playoff among three teams for the big prize. All three teams ended regulation with net 128 for the two days The trophies finally went to Mike Morris and Brian Branka, gaining their triumph on the second extra hole.
