Medina Journal-Register — MIDDLPORT - The six time defending Niagara-Orleans League Roy-Hart boys swim team faces a rebuilding task after being hit hard by graduation.

However, the Channel Cats girls squad, which finished second in the N-O standings at 8-2 returns virtually all of its main point getters.

“We graduated all the horsepower,” said coach Bruce Mathews of his boys squad which has gone 60-0 over the past si N-O seasons.

The Channel Cats graduation losses include six N-O champions - Josh Beabout (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay), Jason Beabout (200 free, 100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay), Zach Yates (50 free, 200 medley relay, 400 fee relay), Patrick Jones (200 medley relay, 200 free relay), Kurtis Parker (200 medley relay) and Cody Jones (200 free relay).

“It’s kind of neat though because now we have a bunch of guys who have been kind of waiting in the wings with a chance to step up,” Mathews said. “We can’t let our guard down but I think we’ll be real strong.”

Leading the way for the Channel Cats is the veteran quartet of senior Jeff Durbin (second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free at the All-League meet), junior Roy Phipps (second in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events and on the winning 400 free relay team), senior Luke Brauer (third in the individual medley and on the winning 200 free relay team) and junior Lyle Wagner (first in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke).

The Roy-Hart girls squad returns largely intact led by senior Sarah DiMayo who won both the individual medley and butterfly at the All-League meet.

The Channel Cats returning group also includes junior Calee Coleman (third in 500 free and forth in 200 free), senior Kylie Majka (second in butterfly), sophomore Lindsay Yates (second in 100 free), senior Cassandra DiLorenzo (second in backstroke) and junior Melissa Zakrzewski (fourth in butterfly).

“Our corp group is still intact,” said Mathews whose Channel Cats finished second to undefeated (10-0) Newfane in last year’s N-O title chase.

Roy-Hart will host Newfane on Dec. 18 and then visit the Panthers on Jan. 15 in two key meets.
