Two Medina harriers qualify for state meet

Medina Journal-Register — ELMA - Two Medina High runners, Nick Zagmeister and Holly Heil, earned top five finishes in the Section VI Class C race held at Elma Meadows Friday to advance to the state cross-country championships.

Zagmeister placed fourth in a time of 17:33 and Heil fourth in 20:33.

Heil had placed second and Zagmester third at the Niagara-Orleans All-League race the previous weekend.

“We did very well,” Medina coach Troy Callard said.

The Medina boys squad finished second in the Class C-1 race behind Alden.

The Mustangs also had two other runners in the top 20 as Steven Hann placed 15th and Austin Heil 18th.

“I was really impressed by their effort. I was on cloud nine,” Callard said.

Zagmeister and Holly Heil will now take part in the Class C state race at Elma Meadows this coming weekend.

“That’s a big advantage to us as we know the course,” Callard said.

The Albion boys squad placed second in the B 2 race behind perennial state power East Aurora.

Colby Baney placed 20th in the B race to lead Albion as Zach Neilans was 27th, Brett Rosato 28th, Shawn Diebel 39th and Mike Patterson 47th.

The Barker boys squad took first place honors in the Class D race. Jordan Bender placed second and Bryce Moeller third to lead the Raiders which also had Hayden Hathaway fifth, Casey Webb sixth and Sergio Cruz 10th.

Roy-Hart’s Eddie Pfeil placed 13th in the C race.
