Medina Journal-Register — BROCKPORT - Snapping a three game losing streak, Medina rolled to a 17-6 victory over Brockport Saturday in a non league lacrosse contest.
Ben Austin had six goals and three assists and Kyle Barna five goals and five assists to spearhead the Medina attack.
In all, the Mustangs got goals from a total of seven different players as Derek Fuller netted two and Brett Pecoraro, Matt Zacher, Aaron Feltz and Nate Sanders one each.
Tommy Zacher made 10 saves in goal to anchor the Medina defense.
Breaking away from a 2-2 deadlock, Medina moved on top for stay by exploding for three lightning quick goals in the first 45 seconds of the second period.
A goal by Fuller just 16 seconds in ignited that uprising. Austin quickly followed up with a goal 18 seconds later off an assist from Barna and Pecoraro tallied 11 seconds after that from Austin to put Medina up 5-2.
“We got off to a slow start but they responded. We got going and played our game,” Medina coach Gordy Luthart said.
Brockport did cut the deficit to 5-4 but Medina answered with another big scoring burst of five goals in a span of four minutes to regain control.
Back-to-back goals by Barna sparked that surge. Austin followed up with two straight tallies and Zacher one to vault the Mustangs into a 10-4 advantage at the half.
Keeping the momentum, Medina maintained a commanding 12-5 advantage at the three-quarter mark as Austin and Feltz each netted a third period goal.
The Mustangs then closed out the victory with a burst of five straight fourth quarter tallies. Sanders’ first goal of the season opened that stretch which also included two goals each by Barna and Austin.
Medina came from behind twice in the early going to pull into a 2-2 tie at the end of the first period as Fuller and Barna tallied during that stretch. It then took the Mustangs only seconds into the second period to take the lead for good.
“We got back on track and got everyone some good playing time,” Luthart said. “I hope we can keep this going into the two tough division games we have this week.”
Improving to 5-3 overall, Medina next hosts Akron at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a Class C Division game. The Mustangs then visit Salamanca on Thursday in another key division contest.
