Tiger matmen have new head coach

Medina Journal-Register — LYNDONVILLE — Long time assistant coach Jeff Gress has stepped into the head coaching spot for the Lyndonville wrestling squad as the Tigers prep for the Nov. 28 non league season opener at Albion.

Defending state champion Tony Recco, a sophomore, heads the Lyndonville mat squad which also includes experience in junior Alex Murphy, sophomore Chris McDonald, freshman Tom Follman and eighth grader Dustin Hinkley.

Recco compiled a 48-3 record as he captured a Section V title before going on to claim a state championship along with his older brother Sam, who graduated in June.

dominated squad so we’re rebuilding this year,” said Gress. “With our small numbers we’re not a dual match team but more of a tournament team.We’ve got some really strong individual wrestlers and we’ve set up a tough schedule for them. We’re looking to make a strong post season run.”

The Tigers squad also includes senior Casey Pounds, sophomore Devon Joy and eighth graders Jeff Gress, Darren Bayne and Dustin Joy.

The Tigers key losses to graduation include, in addition to Sammy Recco, Josh Brabon, Brooks Boyle and Alex Rodriguez who all captured Section V Class B titles.

The Tigers will also compete in tournaments a Tonawanda (Nov. 30 and Dec. 1) and Campbell-Savona (Dec. 14-15) and also host Barker in a non league meet (Dec. 4) before opening the Genesee Region League season Dec. 18 at Attica.
