Purple Eagles keep share of N-O lead

Medina Journal-Register — ALBION - Maintaining a share of first place, defending champion Albion bested Newfane 5-1 Saturday to improve to 6-1 at the half-way point of the Niagara-Orleans League baseball season.

Akron kept pace a top the N-O standings at 6-1 by romping past host CSAT 23-9 and Roy-Hart blanked Barker 3-0.

Connor Barleben hurled a two hitter with 15 strikeouts to lead the way for Albion.

“Connor threw a real nice game. He threw strikes and got ahead of the hitters,” Albion coach Bruce Blanchard said.

Newfane hurler Josh Kneeland likewise pitched a strong game allowing only three hits with 11 strikeouts.

Kneeland also gave Newfane a quick 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI triple in the first inning.

Albion though quickly pulled even at 1-1 on a two-out RBI double by Trey Hart in the second inning.

The Puple Eagles then moved on top to stay at 2-1 in the third inning as John Page walked, stole second and third and came home on an error.

Albion later opened up a little breathing room at 4-1 with two runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ed Narburgh and an error after two other errors set up the opportunity.

Jack Narburgh drove in Albion’s final run with a two out single in the sixth inning.

“We put the bat on the ball when we needed to and we were aggressive on the base paths,” Blanchard said.

The loss drops Newfane to 2-5.

Albion next visits Akron in a key battle for first place on Tuesday.

Akron 23, CSAT 9

BUFFALO - Mitchell Schultz and Zach Pfetner both banged out four hits and Austn Mietz had two triples and a total of five RBIs to lead Akron to a 23-9 victory over winless (0-6) CSAT.

BARKER - Roy-Hart notched its first N-O win in five starts by blanking Barker (2-5) 3-0 as Ryan Farewell hurled a four hitter with 10 strikeouts.
