Mustangs nip Lakemen in N-O finale

Medina Journal-Register — Notching league victory No. 10, Medina edged past Wilson 8-7 Wednesday in the Niagara-Orleans season finale at Vets Park.

Trailing 5-4, Medina regained the lead for good by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth inning on an error, a two-run bunt single by Lawson Fenton and an RBI single by Josh Scroger who had a total of three hits on the day.

A lead-off double by winning pitcher Matt Riemer and a single by Zach Newton, who had two hits on the afternoon, set up the key rally.

Earlier, Medina had grabbed leads of 2-0 and 4-2 by scoring twice in the first inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Newton, once in the third on a fielders choice play off the bat of Danny Barnes and once in the fourth on a wild pitch.

Hits by Scorger and Adam Hoot and a walk loaded the bases to set up the first inning threat while three straight walks loaded the bases in the third.

Wilson took a 5-4 lead by scoring three times in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Taylor Thilk, a fielders choice play and an error.

The Lakemen later added two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-7 on a fielders choice play and an RBI double by Derek Martin. Reimer though preserved the Mustangs narrow lead by blanking Wilson in the top of the seventh facing only four batters.

The Mustangs defensive effort was highlighted by a second inning double play which saw Tyler Colonna make a catch at the fence in left field and throw to Barnes at short who threw on to Newton at first to complete the double play.

Medina finishes the N-O season at 10-4 and Wilson at 4-10.
