Medina Journal-Register — Scoring at least five runs in three different innings, Medina Lanes bested Knights of Columbus 19-4 Saturday in the second and deciding game of the Medina Men’s Softball League Thursday Division playoff championship series.
Medina Lanes quickly moved on top to stay by scoring five times in the top of the first inning ignited by singles by Chuck Hughes, Cliff Brown, Shaun Oberther and Joe Sanders which plated two runs.
KofC answered with one run in the first, on a single by Cole Bronson, and twice in the second, on singles by Ryan Newton, Tom Tibbs, Joe Rosenbeck and Van Morgott, to cut the deficit to 6-3 but could get no closer.
Up 8-4, Medina Lnes broke the game open with five runs in the fifth frame as Curtis Foss, Chris Foss, Hughes and Oberther all drove in runs.
The Lanes then closed out the victory with six runs in the sixth as Oberther singled in two and Hughes, Brown and Casey Busenbark each drove in one.
Hughes and Oberther both had a total of four hits, Brown and Busenbark three and Sanders two.
Ryan Newton had three hits and Cole Bronson two for KofC.
KofC forced a second and deciding contest by winning the title round opener 16-12 rebounding from a 7-2 first inning deficit.
After scoring twice in the first, on a single by Donnell Bennett, and twice in the second, on hits by Morgott and Don Baker, KofC erupted for five runs in the top of the third to take the lead for the first time at 9-7. Bennett again singled in two as a double by Zach Beyer and sacrifices by Newton and Tibbs plated the others.
KofC later clinched the win by scoring five times in the seventh on a two-run single by Bennett, RBI singles by Bronson and Chad Ramming and a fielders choice play. Singles by Mark Morse and Daryl Froman set up the threat.
Bronson had a total of four hits as Bennett and Froman both had three and Ramming and Connor Baker two.
Brown had three hits and Sanders two for Medina Lanes.
The Lanes grabbed the 7-2 first inning lead as Busenbark had a three-run homer, Hughes a triple and Brown and Oberther singles.
KofC advanced to the finals by blanking Intimidator 11-0 in the losers bracket final scoring eight quick runs in the first inning.
Morse, Tibbs and Connor Baker each had two hits as Beyer added a triple and Bronson a double.
Medina Lanes defeated Intimidator 17-5 in the winners bracket final scoring four quick runs in the first inning and six more in the second.
Sanders banged out two home runs and Busenbark added three hits.
KofC rallies to win
regular season finale
Putting together a last ditch seventh inning rally, Knights of Columbus outlasted the Orleans Correctional Facility squad 15-14 Thursday to close out the Medina Men’s Softball League regular season.
Orleans Correctional had grabbed a 14-12 lead by scoring four times in the top of the seventh inning capped off by a two-run double by Tim Bolton.
However, KofC had the last rally in the sea-saw contest answering with three runs in the last of the seventh to claim the win as Bennett singled in the game winner after errors had helped to plate the first two runs. A triple by Skyler Baker ignited the rally which also included a double by Joe Rosenbeck and single by Ryan Metz.
The sixth inning had followed a similar pattern as Orleans Correctional scored four times in the top of the frame for a 10-9 lead highlighted by a home run by Rich Wagner.
KofC though again answered the challenge tallying three times in the bottom of the frame on an error, a triple by Bronson and a single by Newton to regain what proved to be a brief 12-10 lead.
Eatlier, KofC built up as much as a 9-4 lead after tallying six runs in the second, highlighted by two-run singles by Don Baker and Newton, and three times in the third as Zach Beyer had a two-run homer.
