Mustang gridders earn B-East honors

Medina Journal-Register — A dozen Medina High players have earned spots on the B East Division All-Star football squad.

Medina is represented on the first team by the senior quintet of wide receiver Lonnie Taylor, defensive lineman Adam Eick, linebacker Zach Newton, defensive back Jake Cotriss and utility player Ben Austin. Taylor was also named the first team punter and Austin was also a second team linebacker selection.

In addition to Austin, the Mustangs also had three other second team honorees including sophomore quarterback Jason Hellwig, junior running back Kyle Barna and senior defensive back Dan Barnes.

Medina also had junior running back/defensive back Dan Barnes and senior running back/defensive back Derek Fuller receive honorable mention.

Taylor, who scored a total of 12 touchdowns, caught 36 passes for 750 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Defensively he had 6.5 sacks, three interceptions and was in on 35 tackles. He also punted for an average of 36.7 yards.

Cotriss, who led Medina in rushing with 850 yards scored nine touchdowns. He made 40 tackles and had an interception on defense.

Austin, who scored a total of four touchdowns, had 11 pass receptions for 273 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he had six sacks and made 75 tackles.

Eick made 77 tackles and Newton 72.

Hellwig completed 83 of 152 passes for 1,450 yards and 16 touchdowns which is second on the Mstangs all-time single season passing list.

Barna, who scored a total of 12 touchdowns, rushed for 356 yards and caught 17 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, he had two interceptions and made 73 tackles.

Barnes caught 12 passes for 152 yards nd two touchdowns. He also had two interceptions and made 47 tackles on defense.

Fuller had one touchdown pass, 98 yards rushing and made 16 tackles.

Brown scored three touchdowns and had 168 yards rushing and made 22 tackles.
