Medina Journal-Register — Hits and runs proved hard to come by at wind swept Vets Park Saturday afternoon as Akron edged past Medina 2-1 in a Niagara-Orleans League make-up game.
With a gusty wind blowing in, the two teams in fact managed a total of only one base hit.
Akron pitcher Tom James hurled a no hitter with three strikeouts and two walks.
Two Medina hurlers combined to allow only one hit. Adam Hoot pitched the first five innings giving up the one hit, an infield single, and striking out nine. Jason Hellwig hurled the final two frames striking out one.
Akron grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two out error. Another error and a walk set up that opportunity. The Tigers left the bases loaded as Medina got out of further trouble on a ground out to shortstop Dan Barnes.
Medina, which went down 1-2-3 in each of the first three innings, tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Colonna after an error, a fielders choice play and a walk had loaded the bases.
Akron scored what proved to be the game winning run in the fifth inning on a hit batsman, a walk and a wild pitch. Hoot got out of further trouble by notching two clutch strikeouts.
Medina did get a runner to third off an error in the sixth but could not capitalize as an infield out quickly ended the threat.
The Mustangs then went down 1-2-3 in the home half of the seventh.
The Mustangs and Tigers are now both 1-1 in N-O action.
