Mustangs claim B title

Medina Journal-Register — ARCADE - Jumping out to an early two touchdown lead, Medina went on to defeat East High of Buffalo 38-24 Thursday in the championship game of the Class B Chuck Funke Memorial Consolation Bowl at Pioneer High.

Medina moved on top to stay at 8-0 five minutes into the first quarter on a 27 yard touchdown run by Jake Cotriss and a two-point conversion carry by Lonnie Taylor. A 20 yard run by Kyle Barna and a 13 yard pass from quarterback Jason Hellwig to Derek Fuller highlighted that quick four play drive.

The Mustang defense unit stopped East’s first three drives as sacks by Taylor, Charles Beach and Brett Pecoraro highlighted that action.

The Medina offensive unit came up big again early in the second quarter as a big 48 yard pass completion from Hellwig to Taylor set up a 12 yard scoring strike from that same combination upping the lead to 14-0.

East did cut the deficit to 14-8 on a one yard touchdown run and two point conversion ncarry by quarterback Jevante Glover with 1:53 to go in the second quarter.

However, Medina got that one right back with just 18 seconds to go in the half on a two-yard touchdown run by Barna. Cotriss added the two point conversion carry to make it 22-8 at the half. A 32 yard run by Cotriss and a 23 yard pass completion from Hellwig to Taylor keyed that drive.

“We’ve been saying all along that we have to play four good quarters,” Medina head coach Eric Valley said. “When you keep working good things happen and we just keep scrappin and scrappin.”

East again pulled to within 22-16 late in the third quarter on a 13 yard touchdown run by Dajuan Quarles and a two point conversion by Glover but the Panthers would get no closer.

Medina again answered the challenge, this time on a one yard touchdown run by Barna and a two point converse ncarry by Danny Brown with 1:01 remaining in the third quarter upping the Mustangs advantage to 30-16. Hellwig had pass completions of 20 yards to Cotriss on a screen and of 22 to Taylor to spark the drive.
