Purple Eagles double N-O diamond lead

Medina Journal-Register — Defending champion Albion combined a 11-2 victory over host CSAT with Newfane’s eight inning 9-5 win over host Medina Thursday to open up a two game lead a top the Niagara-Orleans League baseball standings.

Albion improves to 10-1 while runner-up Medina slips to 8-3.

John Page went the distance on the mound for Albion scattering six hits and striking out seven.

Steven Stauss banged out four hits, including a triple, and Trey Hart had two base raps and drove in three runs to lead the Purple Eagles at the plate.

Albion broke the game open early scoring five times in the second inning on a two-run single by Hart, and RBI double by Page and a two run sacrifice fly by Ed Narburgh.

Newfane 9, Medina 5 (8)

Newfane pushed across five runs in the top of the eighth inning on a two run error, a hit batsman, a squeeze play and an RBI single by Brian Ratajczak. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases to set up the opportunity.

Earlier, Newfane also got the bases loaded in each of the first three innings on a total of eight walks and one single during that stretch but failed to score. Medina got out of each of those james first on a diving stop by Lawson Fenton for a force out at third, then by a pop fly catch to left by Tyler Colonna and finally on a groundout to Danny Barnes at short.

Medina did take an early 2-0 lead scoring once in the first on a single by Colonna and once in the third on a bunt single by Josh Scroger.

Newfane moved into a 3-2 lead in fourth on a balk and a two run double by Bryan Gertz. The Panthers made it 4-2 in the sixth with a run on a bases loaded walk.

Medina pulled even at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a two out, two run double by Zach Newton but the Mustangs could not regain the lead.

Josh Kneeland went the distane on the mound for Newfane striking out 18 and allowing six hits as the Panthers improve to 6-6.

Barker 11, Wilson 9

Zach Shaft had three hits including a triple,home run and three RBIs, Josh Bergman three hits and Alonzo St. Louia and Jason Demarais two hits apiece including a triple to lead Barker (4-7) past Wilson (4-7) 11-9.

Softball

Mendon 11, Albion 2

PITTSFORD - Breaking away from a 2-2 deadlock, Pittsford Mendon capitalized on three errors and three walks to score eight runs in the sixth inning keying an 11-2 victory over Albion Thurday in a non league game.

Kelsee Soule had three hits and Sarah Papponetti and Halle Jurs two each for Albion.

Newfane 7, Roy-Hart 3

Alexis Moreland hurled a five hitter with four strikeouts as Newfane (11-1) downed Roy-Hart (8-4) 7-3.

Katie Shaw had a two run single and Jamie Kerwin two hits for Newfane.
