Albion, Medina bow in sectional openers

Medina Journal-Register — Post season play came to a quick end for both Albion and Medina Saturday in the opening round of the Section VI Class B-1 softball playoffs.

No. 9 Lackawanna upended No. 8 Albion 9-0 and No. 7 defending champion Dunkirk edged No. 10 Medina 4-1.

Dunkirk 4, Medina 1

DUNKIRK - Leading by a narrow 2-1 margin, Dunkirk scored twice in the sixth inning to lock up a 4-1 victory over Medina.

Jenn Molisani had a double and Emma Fish and Olivia Hermann singles for Medina’s only base raps.

Both teams scored a quick run in the first inning and Dunkirk added another tally in the second to take he lead for good.

“They had a good pitcher. She didn’t strike out a lot but she moved the ball around well,” Medina coach Mark Kruzynski said. “We played really hard and played error free ball. I was very pleased with our effort.”

Medina finishes the season at 6-10 overall.

Lackawanna 9, Albion 0

ALBION - Jumping out to an early 5-0 lead No. 9 Lackawanna went on to defeat No. 8 Albion 9-0.

Up 1-0, Lackawanna erupted for four runs in the second inning on a bases loaded walk, a two-run error and a fielders choice play.

Lackawanna later put a lock on the victory by scoring three times in the fifth on a double, single and fielders choice play.

Albion got a good threat going in the first inning after a lead-off triple by Sarah Pappnetti and a single by Ali O’Hearn but the runners were left stranded at second and third.

The Purple Eagles also stranded two runners in the third inning, after singles by O’Hean and Halle Jurs, and again in the sixth after lead-off singles by Kelsee Soule and Jurs.

Papponetti, O’Hearn and Jurs each finished with two hits as Albion winds up the season at 9-11 overall.

Defensively, Papponetti also teamed up with Jurs to turn a double play.
