Trojans edge past Mustangs

Medina Journal-Register — A late rally fell just short as No. 5 seed Medina dropped a narrow 6-5 decision to No. 12 Southwestern Monday at Vets Park in the opening round of the Section VI Class B-2 baseball playoffs.

Trailing 6-1, Medina got back into the game as Danny Barnes belted a grand slam home run to deep right centerfield with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to slice the deficit to one at 6-5. A single by Matt Riemer, his third hit of the day, a fielders choice play and a bunt single by Jason Hellwig loaded the bases to set up the opportunity.

However, the Mustangs could not plate the equalizer as Southwestern hurler Jake Pillins got out of further trouble by notching the final out on an infield popup. He then faced only four batters in the seventh to preserve the Trojans narrow victory.

Southwestern jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead by scoring once in the first on an error and then five times in the decisive second inning on a fielders choice play, a two-run single by Kyle Radon, a two-run single by Noak Weinshin and an error.

Adam Hoot came on in relief for Medina in the second inning and blanked Southwestern over the final five frames on one hit with five strikeouts during that stretch.

Medina, after stranding two runners in the third inning after singles by Riemer and Josh Scroger, finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth on a two out RBI single by Gage Masters. Lead-off singles by Tyler Colonna and Riemer set up that opportunity. However, the Mustangs again left two runners stranded and then had a double play wipe out a scoring opportunity in the fifth frame.

Falconer 3, Roy-Hart 2

GASPORT - A two-run first inning home run by Judd Jamieson proved to be all the offense Roy-Hart could muster as the No. 7 Rams dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to No. 10 Falconer Monday in a Class B-2 opening round contest.

Class C

Cassadaga Valley 3, Barker 1

CASSADAGA VALLEY - Tanner Gregoire and Tim Flint each had two hits for No. 12 Barker in a narrow 3-1 loss at No. 5 Cassadaga Valley Monday.

Brad Wilson went the distance on the mound for Barker scattering seven hits and striking out six.
