RECCO BROTHERS STATE TITLES TOPS IN 2012

Medina Journal-Register — Making school history in dramatic fashion, Lyndonville High’s brother duo of Sam and Tony Recco both captured state wrestling championships to headline the local sports stories in 2012.

In becoming Lyndonville’s first state wrestling champions, Tony, a freshman, first captured the 106 lb. title with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Nick Casella of Locust Valley. Then just minutes later, Sam, a senior, claimed the 120 pound crown with an equally exciting 2-0 in over Jeff O’Lena of East Rochester.

“It’s the best feeling in the world and even better with the brothers both winning,” said Sam afterwards.

“It’s a great feeling,” agreed Tony, “And it’s even better winning with my brother, together.”

Sam finished the season with a 45-1 record and Tony a 47-3 mark.

The Tigers were also represented at the state championship by senior Brooks Boyle who dropped a pair of narrow decisions in his first two matches and finished with a 47-5 season record.

Sam and Tony Recco and Boyle all advanced to the states by capturing Section V championships.

The Lyndonville Board of Education voted to name the JV gym in honor of former long-time coach Fred Large who started the Tigers wrestling program.

It was also a year when there was a changing of the guard in the Lyndonville coaching ranks with the retirement of a trio of Tiger teachers/coaches including Cathie Hogan, Lisa Kent and Mark Hughes, who had each over 30 years of service to the district.

The Lyndonville girls varsity volleyball squad had a big year capturing the Genesee Region League Division II title.

In track and field competition, Lyndonville’s Haley Anderson captured both the Section V Class C-D shot-put and discus titles.
