Albion tops Medina, 47-25

Medina Journal-Register — ALBION — A big 22-6 scoring advantage over the middle two periods keyed Albion to a 47-25 victory over Medina Friday in a key Niagara-Orleans League girls game.

The victory boosts Albion’s N-O record to 3-1 and keeps the Purple Eagles close behind co-leaders Wilson and Newfane, both at 4-0, while Medina drops into a third place tie at 2-2 with Barker. Newfane defeated Roy-Hart 51-41, Wilson downed Akron 47-23 and Barker trimmed CSAT 51-47 in Friday’s other games.

Trailing 10-6, Albion outscored Medina 7-0 in the second period on baskets by Eboni Taylor, Justice Nauden and Amanda Covis to take a 13-10 lead at the half.

Keeping the momentum, the Purple Eagles then outscored Medina 15-6 in the third period to extend the advantage to 28-16 at the three-quarter mark. Kelsey Soule scored six to lead that uprising which also included baskets by Taylor, Sarah Papponetti, Chanyce Powell and Nauden.

The Purple Eagles then made good on 11 of 15 free throw attempts in the final period to close out the win. Covis netted five points and Soule and Powell four each during that stretch.

“I’ m proud of how they came together as a team,” Albion coach Lucian Price said. “They really worked hard.”

Soule finished with a game high 15 points as Taylor, Powell and Covis each netted seven, Nauden six, Papponetti four and Jessica Green one.

Tanisha Robinson scored 10, Alba Perez eight, Abby Button five and Olivia Hermann two for Medina.

Robinson had a three and a lay-up off a steal and Button and Perez both made layups in the opening period to give Medina a short lived 10-6 lead. The Mustangs were then unable to bounce back from the scoreless second quarter.

Medina next hosts Barker and Albion visits Roy-Hart on Tuesday.

BUFFALO — Julia Atwater scored 15, Olivia Denny 13 and Heather Mason 12 to lead a balanced attack for Barker.
