Mustangs surge past Lakemen

Medina Journal-Register — Completing a home and home season series sweep, Medina downed visiting Wilson 60-47 Tuesday in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game.

Dan Brown scored 16, Lonnie Taylor and Jason Hellwig 12 each and Ryan Thompson 10 to lead the balanced attack for Medina which proves to 3-10.

Kyle Bradley scored 15 and Matthew Baker 13 for Wilson which drops to 1-12.

Trailing 32-30, Medina, which also posted a 58-44 in at Wilson earlier in the season, rallied into the lead for good by putting together a 10-2 run to close the third period.

A rebound bucket and a lay-up by Brown ignited that surge. Taylor followed up with a lay-up and a rebound basket and Brown a lay-up off a steal to cap the uprising which vaulted the Mustangs into a 40-34 lead at the three-quarter mark.

Medina built the advantage to 12, 52-40, with just over two minutes to go in the final period with a 12-6 run which included a rebound bucket and two free throws by Brown and a lay-up and two free throws by Taylor.

Brown went six for six from the line down the stretch as the Mustangs were 14 of 20 from the line in the period to lock up the win.

Wilson did grab a 14-11 lead at the end of the first period as Bradley had six points and Baker and Liam McIntosh three’s for the Lakemen in the early going.

Back-to-back threes by Thompson put Medina up 19-15 early in the second period but Wilson rallied back into a  24-22 advantage at the half on three lay-ups by Bradley to close the period.

There were four ties and three lead changes in the third period before Medina put together the key late 10-2 run to rally into the lead for good.

Keeping up the NBA style schedule, Medina will close out the N-O season by hosting Akron at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
