Albion gridders sweep; Medina Colts rally to win

Medina Journal-Register — Opening the season on a high note, Albion teams swept a tripleheader from visiting Holley Saturday in Niagara Orleans Football Association action.

Albion scored wins of 45-14 in the Mini Division, 34-0 in the JV Div. and 38-14 in the Varsity Div.

The Medina Colts opened with a narrow come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Akron Saturday at Vets Park. In the other games, Akron nipped the Medina Broncos 13-12 in overtime in the JV Div. and Akron downed the Medina Stallions 40-14 in the Varsity Div.

Akron 13, Medina Broncos 12 OT

Brian Fry and Zach Blount scored the touchdowns for the Medina Broncos in the narrow overtime loss to Akron.

On defense, Emmanuel Taylor had five tackles, two sacks, a fumble recovery and two forced fumbles and Mitchell Silversmith three tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

Akron 40, Medina Stallions 14

Joey Salone scored once touchdown and forced a fumble in the endzone which Jude Barna recovered for another touchdown for the Medina Stallions in the loss to Akron.

Albion 34, Holley 0

Deshaun Grace had 110 yards with a touchdown, Eliza Boyd 80 with a TD, Michael Brewer 50 with a TD, Relend Callicutt 28 with a TD and Kevin Hillman 20 with TD to lead Albion past Holley. Brilliance Johnson added 65 yards while Thomas Furmanski completed passes for extra points to Anthony Freeman and Greg Thompson.

Defensively, Kyle Webster, Damen Lattimer and D’onte Farley each made four tackles, Callicutt three and Freeman two and a fumble recovery.

Albion 45, Holley 14

Jahmeek Riley and Amari Jones both rushed for two touchdowns and Michael White and Tyler Gibson one each to spark Albion. Amari Jones also passed 32 yards to Jevon Jones for a touchdown. Amari Jones also ran for one extra point and passed to Jevon Jones for another. 

Amari Jones had 65 yards rushing, Riley 57, White 45, Gibson 39 and Jacob Hughson 33.

On defense, Amari Jones made six tackles and Hughson, Chris Porter and Jadari Johnson four each.

Albion 38, Holley 14

Mark Greene, Antonio Vallejo and Nate Moore each scored two touchdowns for Albion and Isaiah Callicutt had two extra points.

On defense, Greene made seven tackles, Moore, Vallejo and Devon Olles six each. Olles also had a fumble recovery.

Medina Colts 7, Akron 6

Trailing 6-0, the Medina Colts rallied in the fourth quarter to nip Akron 7-6 on a touchdown and extra point by Hayden Woodroe.
