High school fall sports practice gets underway

Medina Journal-Register — The area fall high school sports season got off to a fast start Monday as all area teams began practice under warm, sunny skies.

Football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball and cross-country teams all got practice sessions underway in preparation for the season openers which will come right after the Labor Day weekend.

“It’s always exciting when football season begins. It’s like Christmas,” said Medina varsity football coach Eric Valley.”We had a real good first day. It’s a great way to start.”

The Medina gridders are beginning to prep for the Sept. 6 home opener against Amherst. Albion will also open on Sept. 6 at neighboring Barker/Roy-Hart while Holley, under new head coach Mark Mattice, will travel to Notre Dame of Batavia on Sept. 7.

“I’m really excited for the upcoming season,” said Mattice a native of LeRoy who last year coached the offensive line at Utica College.

Niagara-Orleans League girls soccer action begins Sept. 3 with Newfane at Medina , CSAT at Albion and Akron at Roy-Hart while the boys begin on Sept. 4 with Medina at Newfane and RoyHart at Akron.

N-O girls volleyball competition also begins Sept .3 with Albion at Akron, Medina at CSAT and Roy-Hart at Wilson.

N-O field hockey action gets underway Sept. 5 with Medina at Kenmore, Roy-Hart at Wilson and Newfane at defending champion Barker.

Holley’s boys soccer squad will open the season by hosting a tournament on Sept. 5 and 7 with Roy-Hart, Newfane and Batavia in the field. The Lady Hawks will begin their season with a Genesee Region League home game against Pembroke on Sept. 4.
