Medina Journal-Register — Looking to get onto the winning track, Medina and Albion will both take to the road for the second weekend in a row as the Mustangs and Purple Eagles face B East Division foes.
Medina, which is looking to rebound from a 63-26 drubbing at Depew, will face an East squad at 7 this evening which is also looking to bounce back from a 31-6 loss to Alden. The game will be played on the Riverside High field.
Albion, which is seeking victory number one on the season will visit Newfane at 2 p.m. Saturday in a clash of 0-4 squads. The Purple Eagles dropped a 22-12 non league decision to Batavia last weekend while Newfane lost 30-20 at home to Barker/Roy-Hart.
The big B East game of the weekend though will have Depew at defending champion Alden at 7 this evening in a key clash of undefeated (4-0) squads.
In the Genesee Region League, Holley will look to make it two wins iin a row as the Hawks visit Alexander at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Holley snapped a three game losing streak by outlasting York 43-40 last weekend.
Medina rang up the most points anyone has to date on Depew (26) on touchdown passes of 27 and six yards from quarterback Jason Hellwig to Lonnie Taylor, a two-yard run by Kyle Barna and an 88 yard kickoff return by Jake Cotriss, but the Mustangs defense could not stop the Wildcats offense which scored on nine of 11 possessions.
"We moved the ball some but not consistently and physical we just couldn't match up with them," Medina head coach Eric Valley said. "If you can't win the physical battle up front you're in trouble."
The meeting will be just the second ever between the schools. Medina nipped East 21-14 last year at Vets Park.
Albion built up a 12-0 half-time advantage over Batavia on touchdowns by Tyler Hughson and Jon Warne but the Purple Eagles were held to minus two yards offense in the second half as the host Blue Devils rallied for 22 unanswered second half points to clam the victory and go to 3-1 on the season.
Albion has won the last nine meetings against Newfane, including a narrow 20-14 win last fall. The Purple Eagles hold a 37-9-2 lead in the series which began in 1954. Newfane's last win was a wild 34-33 victory in 1999.
Barker/Roy-Hart snapped a three game season opening losing streak by downing rival Newfane as Brett Cole scored two key second half touchdowns and Brad Bobbit and quarterback Jacob Haight both scored in the first half.
