MOVIES: 'Bangkok Dangerous' reaches No. 1 in slow weekend

The Nicolas Cage action-thriller “Bangkok Dangerous” needed just $7.8 million to take the top spot at the box office in what was the slowest movie weekend in seven years, according to studio estimates released Sunday. The total weekend box office gross was expected to reach just $66 million, the lowest figure since the $59.5 million reported for the weekend of Sept. 21, 2001, according to Media by Numbers.

COLUMN: Best-of lists demean what’s great about music

Driving around town this past weekend, it was quickly clear that there was a holiday Monday.Radio stations of many genres rolled out their “best-of” lists, the gimmick they use most three-day weekends during which some guys at the station (or station listeners) rank the top songs of that station’s format of all-time.Of particular interest to this child of the ’90s was a modern rock countdown on a Canadian station. After the top of the list touched upon Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam and Nirvana, “Under the Bridge” from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was unveiled as the top song.

FAMILY: Cirque du Soleil comes to Buffalo

Most preconceived notions about the circus revolve around the likes of clowns, ringmasters and high-wire acts. Not all of this has changed in modern times. But the circus atmosphere has been completely transformed.Since reinventing the circus in the 1980s by mixing circus arts with street entertainment, vibrant costumes and original music, Cirque du Soleil has grown in nearly every possible way — scope, shows (18 different shows will be presented this year) and cultural impact included.

MUSIC: Music video spotlight

Millions of people still watch music videos. Though it may be hard to believe, considering the lack of music videos being shown channels that used to be known for them, it’s true. As with anything else, fans have flocked to the Internet to satisfy their needs. Many of the most-viewed videos on YouTube.com are music videos, with a few videos registering more than 50 million hits.

COLUMN: A subtle difference between TV cliches

Football season just started, but I’ve already begun to prepare myself for the deluge of clichés I will endure from announcers this fall.Clichés like, “That guy’s just a football player.” (The team would be in trouble if he was a figure skater or a rodeo clown.)Or “They came to play.” (Good, because I’m not sitting here to watch guys put up drywall.)And my new least-favorite sports announcer cliché, “He missed some time with a knee,” or “He missed some time with” any other body part, which, unlike the other clichés, is completely inaccurate. Players don’t lose playing time because of a knee or an ankle. Sprained knees and twisted ankles, yes. Knees and ankles, no.

TELEVISION: Letterman wants to call sunset for late-night gig

David Letterman wants to stick with CBS’ “Late Show” through his contract — and maybe longer — as rival Jay Leno prepares to surrender the “Tonight” reins next year.“The way I feel now, I would like to go beyond 2010, not much beyond, but you know, enough to go beyond. You always like to be able to excuse yourself on your own terms,” Letterman said in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine.

ART: Kenan Center gets hungry

You don’t go far without thinking about food. There’s Wegmans, Emeril on television, backyard tomatoes, a good glass of wine, McDonalds. Baby food, Snickers and fried zucchini. The perfectly-set dinner table and the compost heap. By definition, it’s a universal topic. Enter the artists whose work appears in “Feasting Eyes: Artists Take on Food,” an exhibit beginning today at the Kenan Center in Lockport.

MOVIES: Fall film preview

Isn’t summer supposed to be the season of blockbusters? You would think films would slow down and scale back a bit in the fall. But this autumn’s releases don’t follow that pattern. We’ve got big-budget action-thrillers, returning popular franchises and epics coming our way. It appears the summer has runneth over.

DINING: Wing fling back in Buffalo

Calorie-counters, be warned.Downtown Buffalo will be converted into a gluttonous poultry paradise this weekend as the National Buffalo Wing Festival takes over Dunn Tire Park.In its seventh year, the festival has continued to grow with each turn of the calendar. A record 74,000 people came in 2007 to consume 25 tons of wings — that’s 500,000 of them.

Entering songwriting sessons for the new Candlebox CD, singer/guitarist Kevin Martin made no bones about how important this record would be for the band. The Seattle-based group, which had broken up in 1999 after three albums and a couple of key personnel changes, regrouped two years ago when Rhino Records decided to put together Candlebox greatest hits album.

MOVIES: Michael Moore’s pals make documentary films

They make movies that deal with unpleasant topics such as war and racism, yet are entertaining and even humorous. They’re passionate, mischievously creative, politically liberal.Does this sound like “Michael Moore The Next Generation”?If so, there’s a good reason. These filmmakers once worked with Moore on pictures such as “Roger and Me” and “Fahrenheit 9/11.” Now they’re turning out documentaries of their own.

TELEVISION: 'Battlestar Galactica' franchise steams ahead

Need proof the television ratings system is dead, a victim of the TiVo, the ubiquitous satellite dish and schizophrenic viewing habits? Take a look at what’s happening with “Battlestar Galactica.”If the traditional ratings system is used to measure its success, well, the series is scraping bottom like a viper throwing sparks on a hot landing.Yet the show’s producers are moving forward with two post-“Galactica” projects that would never have seen the light of a cathode tube had ratings been the only factor in the decisions.

MOVIES: ‘Thunder’ reigns again with $16.1 million weekend

The action comedy “Tropic Thunder” weathered a rush of new movies to remain No. 1 for a second-straight weekend with $16.1 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Paramount-DreamWorks release — starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black as actors caught up in real battle while shooting a war movie — raised its 12-day total to $65.7 million.“Tropic Thunder” came in just ahead of Sony’s campus comedy “The House Bunny,” which debuted in second place with $15.1 million. “The House Bunny” stars Anna Faris as an ostracized Playboy bunny who becomes den mother to a sorority of campus misfits.

MUSIC: Toby Keith returns focus to songs

Toby Keith’s screenwriting career might not be off to a good start, but he fortunately has a pretty good day job upon which to fall back. The country singer’s debut writing effort, “Beer for My Horses,” tanked at the box office, earning only $209,253 in a limited release of 91 theaters ($2,299 per screen) during its opening weekend Aug. 8.He doesn’t have much time to reflect on that, though, with the continuation of his “Biggest and Baddest Tour.” The tour, which comes this weekend to Darien Lake, kept Keith busy pretty much every day in the months leading up to the film’s release, as he’d work on the film and do publicity on weekdays and perform concerts on weekends.

FAMILY: The Cave and the Maid

Working for the Cave of the Winds for the past six summers has often dulled my senses when it comes to the Niagara Falls experience.“What’s the big deal? It’s just water. Go take a shower and you’ll see the same thing,” I would often joke. But this weekend I decided to take a step back and look at the falls from a tourist perspective. My uncle was married Friday and I offered to play tour guide for his family from Massachusetts.
