Richard W. Metz

MEDINA —

Richard W. Metz, of Medina, passed away on December 16, 2013, while under the care of Hospice at the Martin Linsin Residence. Mr. Metz was born in Medina on May 8, 1939, a son the late William H. and Inez Lucille (Perry) Metz.
A graduate of Medina High School, Class of 1958, he served in the Signal Corps of the US Army. Following his discharge, he attended the New York State Police Academy in Albany, where he passed the New York State Police Exam in 1964. Richard worked in the surrounding area as a NYS Trooper until 1981. In that same year, he became an investigator with the NYS Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). He retired from the Bureau in 1991. After a brief period, he was then sworn in as Orleans County Undersheriff in 1991 and retired in 1998.
Richard's interests included fishing, boating, hunting and traveling. He especially enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with friends. Richard faced Parkinson's Disease with optimism, a touch of humor and dignity and he will be deeply missed.
Mr. Metz was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Sharon (Kaiser) Metz, whom he married on October 21, 1967. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Colton; and his son, Daniel Metz both of Medina; three granddaughters, Mallory Colton, Samantha and Emily Metz; his sister, Shirley (Barry) Frombgen of Lockport; his brother, Robert (Diane) Metz of East Amherst; cousin, Elizabeth Eastman of Buffalo; niece, Krista Metz of Potsdam; and nephew, Eric Metz of East Amherst. Richard is also survived by his fiance', Sandra Thaine of Medina.
Friends may call on Thursday (5-8 PM) at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 West Center Street, Medina, where his funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 AM. Pastor Linda Haight, Hospice of Orleans Chaplain, will officiate and interment will be in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery, Medina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Orleans, Inc., POB 489, Albion, NY 14411-0489.
