George W. "Bill" Grapes, 91, of Shelby Center, NY, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the Martin-Linsin Residence, Albion. Born on December 1, 1922, in Lockport, NY, he was the son of the late George and Viva (Colman) Grapes.
George graduated from Medina High School and during WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, a member of the 449th Flying Horseman, he was stationed in Italy. Upon returning home, he started employment with Phinney Tool & Die, retiring in 1987. He married the late Dorothy J. Breitbeck on June 24, 1950 and together made their home in Shelby Center. George was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, boating and was a former member of the Auxiliary Police, where he was avid marksman. George was a summer resident of Fishers - Landing in the 1000 Islands.
He is survived by two children, Robert J. Grapes of Fairfield, CA, Barbara (Robert) Hoffman of Medina; two grandsons, Kurt and Eric Hoffman; a sister, Zella Moore of Fairport, NY; and a nephew, Tom (Evelyn) LaMers of Ohio.
There are no calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. The family would like to express a heart warm Thank You to the Willows and Hospice for their compassionate and comforting care. Memorials may be made in George's name to Hospice of Orleans Co., P.O. Box 489, Albion, NY 14411. Arrangements were made through the Bates & Tuttle Funeral Home, 226 Pearl St. Medina, NY.
