DAYTON, OH —
Munson Paul Serve passed away Friday, November 9, 2012, at Hospice of Dayton, OH, surrounded by family, after an almost eight-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy; he was 72.
Munson was born in Medina, NY on November 26, 1939, the son of the late J. Kenneth and the late Marcia Jane (Munson) Serve.
He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Class of '61 (BS Chemistry) and '64 (PhD Chemistry), and performed post doctoral studies at the University of Chicago '65.
Munson was one of the earliest members of the Wright State Chemistry faculty, coming to Wright State in 1965 (then known as the Dayton branch campus of Miami University and Ohio State University) as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1969 and to Professor in 1975. He served as department Chair from 1993-1999, and from 1999 until his retirement in 2003 was an Assistant Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics part time, and part time teaching in the Chemistry Department.
As Assistant Dean his duties were mainly in the area of science education for teachers, especially early childhood education. After retiring from Wright State, Munson then taught chemistry at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN for the 2004 and 2005 Spring semesters.
Munson was a member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, and enjoyed swimming, walking, traveling, eating out with friends and family, watching his favorite television shows, and was an avid dog lover.
Munson is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mrs. Mila (Placke) Serve of Kettering, OH; sons, Patrick Serve of Kettering, OH, Michael(Lindsey) Serve of Columbus, OH, John (Tracey) Serve of Chicago, IL; and granddaughter, Harper Serve of Columbus, OH; sisters, Mrs. Faith (John) Lyons of Largo, FL, and Ms. Cynthia Serve of Largo, FL.
Munson donated his body to the Boonshoft School of Medicine's anatomical program, at Wright State University, and also donated part of his brain for research study of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, in the hopes of one day finding a cure for the disease.
A memorial service was held at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church on Saturday, November 24, 2012, in Munson's memory. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to go to CurePSP.org or SICSA.
