Richard Hobart

MEDINA — On July 3, 2013, Richard Hobart, loving husband of Karen and loving father of Jessica and Matthew, went to be with the Lord after a long heroic battle with cancer. His family and friends were by his side.

Richard was born on January 1, 1950 in Ames, IA, the first baby in Iowa that year. He lived in Cuba with his family as a young boy, only leaving because of Castro's revolution. He and his family then lived in Jacksonville, FL, until ending up in Medina, where he went to high school and graduated in 1967. He was accepted into the ROTC naval officer training program and spent some time on a ship stationed off of California.

When his father's job landed his family in Switzerland, Richard stayed behind in Medina and worked for about 10 years at ABEX. During that time he met his wife, Karen. They were married in 1972 and raised two children, Jessica and Matthew. When ABEX closed, he went to college at GCC and earned an associate's degree in computer technology. With this degree he was able to get a job at Fisher Price where he worked until they closed down. He was then able to get several temp jobs that he enjoyed. His last job was as a custodian at the RoyHart schools which he enjoyed very much. He had to retire when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Richard will be remembered as a quiet, calm, intelligent man. He played guitar in a band in high school and then in a praise band in church with his special friends, Valerie and Patrick Deegan.

He was a man of many talents. His family enjoyed his art work and many photographs that he enjoyed taking. He loved cooking and invented many delicious meals. He loved his dog, Bella. He was often found reading on his Kindle and watching old sitcoms and Bonanza. He traveled often and especially loved Wellfleet, Cape Cod where they spent many vacations.

His church was very important to him and gave him courage to live and die. Besides playing guitar in the praise band, he changed the sign in front of the church for several years and helped with the Multimedia. He was chosen by his church family to be lay person of the year which was a very special honor.

He was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Hobart; and his sister, Judy (Hobart) DiGiulio. He is survived by his wife, Karen (Benz) Hobart; children, Jessica Hobart (Phoenix, AZ), and Matthew Hobart (Waterport). Also, his father, Oscar Hobart (Roswell, GA) and sister, Janis  (Hobart) Ferry; brothers-in-law, Fred Ferry, Jack DiGiulio, Kurt Benz, Erik Benz and Dane Benz; and sisters-in-law, Gretchen Dunn, Linda Benz and Marianne Scott. He had 14 nieces and nephews, and four great-nieces and nephews. He also had some very dear friends, Sue and Dick Craft and Valerie and Patrick Deegan, and Rebeccah Demaray.

Calling hours are on Sunday, July 7, from 2:00-5:00 PM at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. His funeral service will be Monday, July 8, at 10:00 AM, at the Medina  United Methodist Church, 222 W. Center St., Medina.
