HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC —
Gerald Eugene Hilger, 78, of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 in his home with his wife, Lois, by his side. He was born in Lockport, NY to the late O. Eugene and Lucille Hilger.
He retired to Hilton Head 20 years ago, however still enjoyed time in Medina, NY working on his country property.
Jerry attended St. Lawrence University majoring in Geology. After college he served in the U.S. Army for two years. He began his career in medical devices with a small company. He modified their industrial products for medical application which included equipment for the early stages of open heart surgery and later, dialysis equipment. He started his own company, Cormed Inc., in 1976, working on infusion devices used for chemotherapy. He developed and patented a vascular access device which made life easier for cancer patients. He sold the company in 1986 to C.R Bard.
He served as President of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts and President of the Medina Hospital Board. He was very active in skiing and was part of the National Ski Patrol at Holimont for 40 years. Upon retirement he enjoyed scuba diving, travel, tennis, golf at Bear Creek Golf Club, and begrudgingly played bridge with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois DuBois Hilger; three daughters, Cynthia (Kirk) Barnum EdD, Penny Dowden DVM, and Lynette (Al) Gerstel; and his nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head on Sunday, April 28, at 3:00 PM, followed by a celebration of life at Bear Creek Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Low Country, P.O. Box 3827, 119 Palmetto Way, Bluffton, SC 29910; First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head, 540 William Hilton Pkwy., Hilton Head, 29928; or Friends of Bear Creek, Whooping Crane Way, Hilton Head, SC 29926. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
