MEDINA —

Grace Baker Wheatley, a lifelong resident of Medina, passed on to eternal life on November 21, 2013 at the Orchard Manor Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. Grace was born on July 12, 1923 and was the daughter of George and Daisy Baker who resided on their Alice Road farm in Medina.
Grace graduated from Medina High School in 1940 and married David A. Wheatley on August 5, 1946. They resided at 346 East Oak Orchard St. in Medina for almost all of their married life. Grace was a worker from a very young age and really enjoyed working, keeping busy and helping others. She was employed by Loblaw's Grocery, the Case Paint and Wallpaper Store and as a baker, cook, dietitian and cafeteria manager for the Medina Central Schools. Many students and teachers, especially those at the Wise Junior High School, were especially blessed and fortunate for the delicious lunches, homemade pies, celebrations and parties that were a part of her school lunch program. She was a very faithful, active, dedicated and reliable member of the United Methodist Church. Grace loved working on church suppers, luncheons, coffee hours, etc. and delighted in watching children enjoy her famous homemade cookies! She also attended and taught Sunday school for many years and looked forward to Vacation Bible School. She was the Brownie and Girl Scout Leader of Troop 32, leading and enjoying many campouts, campfires, bike trips, cookie sales and Girl Scout activities. In retirement, Grace helped mow lawns with her husband, Dave, for many senior citizens in Medina and volunteered for countless hours in the gift shop and at the reception desk at the Medina Memorial Hospital and at the food pantry.
Our Mom loved Medina! She loved her church, the hospital, sitting on her front porch and visiting with her family, friends and neighbors, the parades, the marching band, the acapella choir, the advent service in the park, Lenten luncheons and dinners, the canal festival, the apples and peaches and the many warm traditions of this community! She brought a great deal of love, perseverance, energy, enthusiasm, smiles and pride to everyone that she met and always tried her very best, not only in good times, but on difficult days as well.
Grace’s greatest joy was sharing great times with her family! She loved family meals, reunions, summer camping at Allegheny State Park and get-togethers. Our dad loved working with mom's family on the farm, especially bailing hay with Grandpa Baker, Uncle Billy and the Baker/Wheatley cousins. The women and girls of the family prepared delicious meals that were always filled with laughter, love and great times that were enjoyed by all after the farm work for the day was complete. Grace loved learning about the Wheatley traditions- Little Mince Pies with Grandma Wheatley’s homemade mincemeat recipe from England were family favorites. Summer reunions and Christmas Day afternoons with the Wheatley's were highlights of the year! She nursed and cared for many relatives in our family home, was always a very loving and gentle caregiver and was the regular family gardener at all the cemeteries in Medina, Millville and West Shelby.
In addition to her parents, Grace was predeceased by her beloved husband, David; and her brothers, Mervin and William Baker. She is survived by her dear sister, Dorothy Nowak; her three children, Brenda (Jeffrey) Vredenburg, Rev. David (Elaine) Wheatley and Jack (Sherry) Wheatley; grandchildren, Christopher (Amie) and Matthew Vredenburg, Juliane (Paul) Hillis, Christina (David) Rheam, Peter Wheatley, John (Heather) Wheatley and Joanna Wheatley; many cousins, nieces and nephews; nine great-grandchildren, Luke, Marc, Shane, Madelena, Lilah and Lincoln Vredenburg, Steven, William and Amelia Hillis and Caitlin and Matthew Rheam; and many friends.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM at the United Methodist Church, 222 W. Center St., Medina. Burial will be in Bates Road Cemetery. Donations may be given in Grace’s memory to the Medina Memorial Hospital, Medina United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.
