Thomas M. Hickey, retired Medina businessman, died on Wednesday, May 29, 2013. He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on May 10, 1924, the son of the late William L. and Inez (Corner) Hickey, both Medina natives.
Mr. Hickey graduated from Oliver High School in Pittsburgh, PA in 1942. Following his graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Force in December 1942 as an aviation cadet pilot. He served three years and was discharged in 1946. On July 2, 1947 Mr. Hickey married the former Helen Shoemaker. After returning to Medina, he attended the University of Buffalo and graduated with a Bachelors in 1951. He then engaged in the retail furniture business, opening the Hickey Furniture Company in Medina and retired in 1991.
Mr. Hickey was a communicant at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, St. Mary's Church in Medina. He enjoyed boating and golfing and was a past member of the Oak Orchard Yacht Club, US Power Squadron, ButtsClark Post #204 American Legion, Medina Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus and Shelridge Country Club.
Mr. Hickey is survived by his loving wife of nearly 66 years, Helen S. Hickey of Medina; his two daughters, Ann (Paul) Michaud of Oakfield and Susan (Charles) Slack of Medina; five grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Michaud, Abigail (Steven) Jakubowski, Dr. Aaron Slack, Martin Slack and Brian (Kristin) Slack; three great-grandchildren, Alana Slack, Liv Jakubowski and Samuel Slack; and five nephews, James, William and Robert Vosteen and James and Gerald Shoemaker. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth (Robert) Vosteen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, St. Mary's Church, Medina. The Rev. Daniel J. Fawls will celebrate. Burial will be in Boxwood Cemetery, Medina, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Lincoln Post #1483 VFW and the ButtsClark Post #204 American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, 215 Eagle St., Medina, NY 14103 or to Hospice of Orleans, 14080 Rt.31 West, P.O. Box 489, Albion, NY 14411. Arrangements were completed by Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina.
