AUTO RACING: Jipp Ortiz wins Sportsman feature at Big R

RANSOMVILLE — Ransomville’s Jipp Ortiz won Friday night’s 25-lap Original Pizza Logs Sportsman main event at Ransomville Speedway.

Ortiz took the lead away from James Henry of Niagara Falls on lap No. 13 and held it the remaining twelve laps. Ortiz enjoyed his second win of the season.

Henry, Ransomville’s Don Spatorico and from St. Catharines, Ontario, Justin Sharp and James Friesen, rounded out the top five

“The Cobra,” Chuck Hebing of Ontario, took top honors aboard the 25-lap Patriot Sprint feature main.

Derrick Borkenhagen of Niagara Falls became the 11th different winner in the Streetstock Division, inheriting the lead from Ransomville’s Don Rappleyea just prior to the halfway point, after Rappleyea’s N. 6 developed mechanical woes and headed pitside.

Borkenhagen led the remaining distance to the win. Wilson’s Roger Israel, Ransomville’s Pat Burek, Wilson’s Jaren Israel and Newfane’s Gerald Poole rounded out the top five.

Lockport’s Dave Conant notched his second Streetstocks win of the season. Conant was followed by Sanborn’s Brandon Sherwood, Ransomville’s Webb Nashwinter, Wilson’s Chris Burek and the Big R’s neighbor, Sean Letts.

Racing resumes Thursday through Saturday night at the Big R.

On Thursday, CWM Chemical Services and Cosco Haulage Present the Advance Auto Parts BB Mod Tour, plus sportsman racing and fireworks. Gates open at 4 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Wilson Automotive Presents Ladies Night with ladies getting in for $5. Streetstocks, Firehall Enduro sportsman and fireworks are on tap.

On Saturday, Performance Manufacturing Inc. Presents the Niagara Cup Go-Kart Nationals-$1000 to win Stock Medium 50. Gates open at 1 p.m. Racing begins at 4 p.m.
