COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Sept. 9): Niagara women's soccer knocks off Syracuse

Stephanie Gartley scored the game winner in the 85th minute as Niagara downed Syracuse 3-2 on Sunday at Niagara Field. The Purple Eagles scored all three of their goals in the second half to rally for the win and improve to 3-1-0.

“I’m very proud of the way the team played today,” head coach Peter Veltri said.

Buff State wins tourney

A pair of goals from Anthony Johnson (Kenmore East) led Buffalo State to a 3-1 victory over SUNYIT on Sunday in the title game of the Buffalo State All-America Classic.

Buffalo State defender Zack Eastman was named the tournament MVP after helping the Bengals to back-to-back shutouts.

UB wins, but Canisius gets title

Bobby Shuttleworth was named the tournament’s Defensive MVP as he led the University at Buffalo to a 3-1 victory over Detroit on Sunday during the final round of the UB Classic, but the Bulls lost the overall title to Canisius, which beat Wright State, 5-1. Canisius won the title on goal differential.

Niagara tops St. Francis

Levi Tesch’s rebound of his own failed penalty kick was the difference as Niagara downed St. Francis 2-0 in the final game of the Niagara Falls Classic at Niagara on Sunday.

“I feel we still have to do a better job finishing the changes we create, but I was pleased with our defense as we posted another shutout.”

BASEBALL

NCCC takes two

Sean Jamieson had four hits and five RBIs as the Niagara County Community College baseball team defeated Jamestown Community College 15-2 on Sunday. The Trailblazers also won a nightcap 4-3 as Mike Brosius (NT) and Rob Linhart (Newfane) each contributed a pair of hits.
