HS ROUNDUP (Sept. 26): Andrews, Lambert pace Niagara Catholic spikers to victory
Emily Andrews had 10 kills and seven assists to help carry the Niagara Catholic girls volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 non-league win over Tapestry on Friday night.
Jolene Lambert was 23-for-23 serving with two aces and four kills for Catholic (2-5 overall), and Leah Fasciano had one ace on 10-for-10 serving. Caitlan WIlliams had 10 kills and seven aces to lead Tapestry (1-3).
Ken East 3, Lew-Port 0
Alex Dickson had 19 digs as the Bulldogs rolled to a 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 victory. Grace O’Connell had four kills for East (2-6 overall, 2-5 NFL). Lew-Port fell to 1-5 in the NFL and 1-7 overall.
Ken West 3, Niagara Falls 0
Kristen Hopfer had four kills and Sarah Pray chipped in nine assists as Ken West picked up a 25-11, 25-18, 25-20 victory to improve its NFL record to 5-1. Quimeka Saunders had four blocks and Lauren Rogers added 14 digs for the winless Wolverines (0-6).
Wilson 3, Akron 1
Lindsay Bryer had 31 digs to lead Wilson (3-4 overall, 3-3 N-O) in the 17-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-21 win. Akron is also 3-3 in the N-O.
Roy-Hart 3, Barker 0
Bridget Shanahan had 18 kills and Steph Wood added eight kills to help the Lady Rams move to 7-0 in N-O play. The scores were 25-15, 25-13, 25-12. Barker is 0-6.
Starpoint 3, W. Seneca E. 0
Sydney Palka had 13 service points and 18 assists in the 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 victory. Julie Hitzges chipped in with 11 service points and nine kills for the Spartans (7-2 overall, 5-1 ECIC II). West Seneca East is now 4-3 in the league.
Boys Volleyball
Lockport 3, NT 1
Michael Kojsza had 12 kills while Kyle Shanley added 23 digs to lead the Lions to a 25-21, 21-25, 27-25, 25-17 Niagara Frontier League win. Sean Smith had seven blocks for Lockport (3-1). For North Tonawanda (3-1), Steve Bzibiak had seven kills and Jesse Karcher had three kills and three blocks.
Grand Island 3, N-W 0
Jonas Stalyga had 17 kills and John Oyer added eight of his own for the VIkings in their 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 NFL win. Tyler Hinamin added 37 assists for Grand Island (3-1 NFL). Kyle Henry notched seven kills to lead the Falcons (3-3 overall, 3-1 NFL).
Ken West 3, Niagara Falls 1
Ryan Spieglehoff had 10 kills and Tom Knab added 16 digs for the Blue Devils (3-1 NFL) in a 25-11, 25-13, 21-25, 25-12 victory. Tim Drylewski had 12 assists and Michael Watson added nine kills for Niagara Falls (2-4 overall, 0-4 NFL).
Girls Swimming
Lockport 68, Lew-Port 25
Lauren Lynos won the 100 fly for Lockport while Carmella DiMillo finished first in the 100 breaststroke. Both Lynos and DiMillo were part of the winning 200 medley relay team for the Lady Lions (2-2 NFL). Chelsea O’Laughlin won the 50 and 100 frees for Lew-Port (1-3) and was also part of the winning 200 free relay squad.
N-W 108, NT 78
Marissa Oakey broke two of her own Niagara-Wheatfield school records she set earlier this year, putting up a 2.00.03 in the 200 free and a 55.10 in the 100 free. Her time in the 100 was a state qualifier. Oakey was also part of the 200 free relay team that set a Falcons (4-0 NFL) school record with a time of 1:45.06.
For the Lady Jacks (0-4), Andrea Parrish won the 50 free and her time of 55.19 in the 100 free qualified her for states.
Niagara Falls 67, Ken East 32
Maggie Garito (200 medley relay, 100 fly), Alexa Masker (200 medley relay, 200 free relay), Kristen Champoux (100 free, 200 free relay) and Emily Sliwowski (200 IM, 200 free relay) were double-winners for the Wolverines (3-1 NFL). Alyssa Rogers (100 back, 400 free relay) posted a pair of victories for Ken East (0-4).
Kenmore West 129, Grand Island 54
Lindsey Sagasta won the 100 and 200 frees and helped push West to a win in the 200 free relay. Haley Rice (200 IM, 500 free) was also a double-winner for the Blue Devils (4-0 NFL) and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team. West competed without star Marissa Dressell, who was out of town. The lone Grand Island (2-2) win from Megan McIerney (diving).
Starpoint 105, Maryvale 52
Courtney Gfroerer won the 200 IM and the 500 free as Starpoint (2-1-1 ECIC III) won every singles event but the 100 breast, which was taken by Maryvale’s Katie Huber.
Alden 115, Tonawanda 63
Brielle Clontz won the 100 fly and Emily Christman took the diving for Tonawanda (1-2), but Alden ran away with an ECIC victory.
Golf
Ken East 240, Niagara Falls 275
Pierce Terrance and Dan Giliforte both registered 37s at Hyde Park for the Bulldogs. David Byrwa added a 38 as East upped its NFL record to 5-3. Greg Bullock shot an even-par 36 to lead the way for the Wolverines (1-6-1).
Grand Island 252, NT 280
Grand Island’s Brian Brink fired a 1-under-par 35 at River Oaks to lead the winners. Also, Alex Fry had a 39, while Kevin Borowicz and Kurtis Johnson each had a 42 for GI (3-4-1). For North Tonawanda (0-7-1), Max Mistriner led the way with a 43.
N-W 244, Lew-Port 248
Lew-Port’s Matt Petrosian was medalist with a 35 at Tan Tara Golf Club, and his teammate Mike Boss had a 37, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team effort of the Falcons. Billy Lumadue led N-W (8-0 NFL) with a 37 while Alex Kammerer added a 38. Lew-Port fell to 5-3.
Newfane 203, Wilson 266
Erik Taheri fired a 1-over-par 36 to lead undefeated Newfane to the Niagara-Orleans win at Oak Run Country Club. Eric Wright added a 39 for Newfane (11-0 N-O), T.J. Manhardt and Nick Nickerson had 42s, Eric Lipa finished with a 44 and Andy Ames chipped in a 45. Jake Rohring shot a 41 to lead the Lakemen (3-8).
Medina 231, Roy-Hart 273
Ethan Poler was medalist with a 40 at Sheridge to help the Mustangs move to 9-3 in N-O play. Roy-Hart fell to 2-9.
Albion 244, CSAT 264
Peter Dombrowski was medalist with a 40, but Jonathan Krieger fired a 46 and Peter Gaylard had a 48 to help Albion improve to 5-6 in the N-O. CSAT is 0-11.
Girls Tennis
Lockport 4, N-W 1
Miller Barmasse, Andrea Licata and Kitty Naughton posted singles wins and Gianna Viola and Lexi Emmi were winners at first doubles for Lockport, which improved to 4-3 in the NFL. The Lady Falcons (5-2) got a win at second doubles from Kelly Bourque and Brianna Fiorita.
Ken East 5, Lew-Port 0
Natalie Bock and Mackenzie Link of Lew-Port took Ken East’s Kelsie Flynn and Katie Blanch the distance at first doubles, but Flynn and Blanch prevailed in a three-set NFL thriller, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. Melissa Willhoff added a singles win for East (3-4 NFL). Lew-Port is now 0-5 in the league.
Ken West 5, Niagara Falls 0
Alex Filey and Avery Fisher of Ken West won at singles without dropping a single game. At doubles, Kelsey Felice and Haley Diamond won as West improved to 6-2 in the NFL. The Falls dropped to 1-7.
Starpoint 5.5, Cheektowaga 0
Meg Gildersleeve, Sandy Spearin and Kelli Reinhardt all won at singles in the Lady Spartans’ sweep. Also for Starpoint (4-2 overall, 4-1 ECIC III), Heather and Holly Zuch won at first doubles. Cheektowaga’s record drops to 0-5.
Eden 4, Tonawanda 1
Meghan Kossow upped her individual season record to 5-0 with a three-set win at first singles for Tonawanda (2-3 ECIC IV), but it wasn’t enough to register a league win. Sarah Hudson and Laura Kyle won their singles matches for Eden (3-1).
Girls Soccer
Grand Island 10, Ken East 0
Jordan Dudish had a hat trick while Jenna Raepple and Liz Lorence each had two goals in the home win. Sara McNulty, Kaitlin Holt and Sara Victor all had single tallies for the Vikings (6-0 overall, 5-0 NFL). Kristen Wegrzyn and Sara Palazza teamed up to shutout the Bulldogs (2-4-1, 2-2-1).
Ken West 2, NT 1
Goals from Caitlyn Donahue and Lexi Panepinto gave West a 2-0 lead at halftime and goalkeeper Kirsty Webb helped seal the win with several key saves late in the NFL win. The Lady Blue Devils are now 6-0 overall and 5-0 in league play. Freshman Emily Slominski took a feed from Amanda Smyth for the lone Lady Jacks (5-3, 4-2) score.
Lew-Port 3, Niagara Falls 0
Amy Roemer, Haley Besaw and Bianca Marrara all scored as the Lancers got their first Niagara Frontier League win. Erin Kinz got the shutout in goal for Lew-Port (2-6 overall, 1-5 NFL). Gabrielle Grace had 15 saves in goal for the Wolverines (0-6 NFL) while Elena Dilaurla played well on defense.
Starpoint 7, Olean 0
Kristi DeLabio had two goals while Ashley Wallace, Katelyn Mazgaj, Liz Wilson, Catie Hale all scored for the Lady Spartans (5-4 overall) in the non-league win. Lori Redfern had two saves behind a solid Starpoint defense to earn the shutout.
Junior Varsity
• Megan Ireland had a goal and two assists as Lew-Port defeated NFHS 3-2. Lexi Caputo scored twice for the Falls.
Boys Soccer
Newfane 6, N. Catholic 0
Justin Harvey had three goals and Christian Hawkes, Ryan Doyle and Jeremy Fischer added scores in the win. Adam Farley had three assists and Steve Chadwick had the shutout for Newfane (3-4 overall).
Wilson 2, City Honors 1
Alex Brennan netted a goal on a pass from Cody Quinn to open the scoring 90 seconds into the second half for Wilson in non-league action. Collin Okoniewski had 12 saves for the Lakemen (5-3 overall) while Kyle Jones assisted Tyler Reimers for a score. Nate Scott had the lone goal for City Honors.
