COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Oct. 12): NU soccer teams both score wins

Kenmore East graduate Eric Brodfueher was one of two Niagara Purple Eagles to record hat tricks in a 7-1 win over Rider in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s soccer game Sunday at Niagara Field.

Freshman Carl Haworth also had three goals for Niagara (7-3-2 overall). Levi Tesch had the Purple Eagles’ other tally.

Rider (1-9-2) got its lone goal from Nico Tramontana.



Women’s soccer

Niagara 3, Iona 0

Ashleigh Bowers made eight saves as the visiting Purple Eagles earned the MAAC victory. Tonawanda native Caitlin Long scored her first goal of the season for Niagara (9-4-1 overall, 2-2-0 MAAC), while Caitlyn Kilkenny and Chiara Greco also found the net.

The Gaels dropped to 2-13-0 overall and 1-3-0 in league play.



D’Youville 5, Penn St.-Berks 4

Stephanie Lozzi (Lew-Port) had a goal as the host Spartans (3-8-1 overall, 3-3-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference) earned the win.



Swimming and diving

Sophomore diver Ian O’Rourke (Grand Island) broke his own Niagara record Saturday in the 1-meter event, totaling 480.00 points on 11 dives as the Purple Eagles opened the 2008-09 season at the Western New York Invitational. O’Rourke bested his previous score of 451.14. On the 3-meter board, O’Rourke also broke his record, finishing with 494.80, 53 points higher than his best score last season.

On the women’s side, freshman Lisa Shanks broke the 100 and 200 backstroke records with times of 1 minute, 00.93 seconds and 2:10.09, respectively.

The invitational was a non-scoring meet.



Women’s hockey

New Hampshire 5, Niagara 2

Courtney Birchard and Kelly Paton scored just 26 seconds apart in the second period as visiting New Hampshire, ranked No. 4 in the country, came away with the win.

Nathalie Larsen scored her first-ever goal for Niagara (0-4-0 overall) and Frances McPhail scored less than 50 seconds later to tie the game 2-2 in the second period, but New Hampshire (2-0-1) answered right back.

Jenni Bauer made 34 saves in the loss.



Women’s volleyball

Manhattan 3, Niagara 0

Niagara committed 38 errors as visiting Manhattan earned the 25-20, 25-14, 25-22 MAAC win.

Niagara (3-16, 1-7) was led by Hannah Hedrick, who had nine kills. Kathy Bibler had six kills in the loss.
