UB FOOTBALL: Bulls still have something to play for — win at Miami

Staff Reports

The University at Buffalo football team will look for its first win at Miami’s Yager Stadium tonight in a game to be televised on ESPNU.

Used to be, that would qualify as a meaningful game for the Bulls. But last season’s Mid-American Conference championship and International Bowl appearance raised expecations on campus.

UB didn’t meet those expectations this year. Last week’s home loss to Ohio put the Bulls at 3-7 and made them ineligible for bowl play.

“As long as you’ve got games to play, you can’t sulk,” coach Turner Gill said this week. “We’re going to out and play thet best football game we can play.”

Gill said the chance to become the first UB team to win at Miami will be a motivating factor, but that he thinks his players would be ready to play regardless.

“I think everybody’s attitude is to continue to try and get better,” he said. “I feel good about where our football team is at.”

Starting tailback Ike Nduka is probable from a sprained ankle that kept him out of last week’s game.

Miami (1-10), in its first season under coach Michael Haywood, its looking to avoid its worst record since the 1988 team went 0-10. Last year’s team went 2-10.
