Albion swimmers ready to turn over a new leaf

Burroughs' squad looks to make amends after winless 2012-13

ALBION — Purple Eagles swim coach Carlos Burroughs knows that last year's Albion swim season was a bit disappointing. Struggling with team depth, the Purple Eagles went without a victory in both girls and boys play, Burroughs said.

But the Albion swimmers haven't let the losses get them down. Coach Burroughs and his athletes have remained energized as they prepare for the 2013-14 season, and they are ready to turn over a new leaf this time around.

"We're just taking it one day at a time," Burroughs said. "We want to get a little bit better each day, and we're going to see what happens."

On the boys side, the Purple Eagles are led by junior Morgan Seielstad, as part of a six-man roster that also includes sophomore Dan Beam, freshman Bailey Maier, juniors Tim Blue and Michael Welles, and eighth-grader Tyler Kast. It's a relatively young group, but one that Burroughs is excited to help develop as the season moves along.

On the girls side, Burroughs is excited about the depth of his roster and hopeful that the talent can help lead Albion to a few victories over the course of league play. The coach points to senior captains Brooke Wilson (a volleyball standout in the fall) and Shannan Wells for leadership, along with junior Olivia Neidert.

The girls roster is rounded out by Elizabeth Furmanski, Brianna Caldwell, Sarah Graham, MacKenzie Luft, Ashley Hapeman, Clara Stilwell, Rylie Lear and Xochitl Rosanio.

The team will be hurt by the loss of up-and-coming freshman Elizabeth Jurs, who swam for Albion in seventh and eighth grade but recently moved out of the district. It's unfortunate for the Purple Eagles, but Burroughs said that's just the way things go sometimes.
