After playing to a 3-3 tie in the first meeting between the two teams, Medina was looking for a bit of revenge in its regular-season finale against Roy-Hart, as the Mustangs prepare for sectional playoff competition. And after a huge win over No. 1 Akron on Tuesday, the Mustangs wanted to avoid a letdown.
Mission accomplished. Medina found scoring from three different players, Adam Hoot earned his school-record-tying seventh shutout of the season, and the Mustangs earned a 3-0 victory over Roy-Hart in a Niagara-Orleans League game at Veterans Park on Thursday afternoon.
Scott Barber opened the scoring 18 minutes into the game, on a free-kick assist from Brennan O'Conner. James Ianni scored directly on a corner kick with just two minutes remaining in the first half, to give Medina a 2-0 edge at intermission.
The lone goal of the second half came 12 minutes in, as O'Conner fed Anthony Pane for the score. From there, it was just a matter of playing good defense and securing Hoot the shutout. With the effort, Hoot ties Mike Merritt (2010) for most shutouts all-time by a Mustang.
Medina finishes the regular season at 8-2-2 in league play, while Roy-Hart falls to 5-6-1.
Medina earns the No. 2 seed in Class B-1 and will receive a first-round bye, opening the postseason in the B-1 quarterfinals next Wednesday. Start time is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Veterans Park, and the opponent is yet to be determined.
