Medina field hockey falls at Akron

CLASS C PLAYOFFS: No. 1 Barker downs Roy-Hart

AKRON — From the get-go on Tuesday afternoon, the Akron field hockey squad was clearly superior to Medina, dominating possession and keeping the Lady Mustangs on their heels for the majority of the game.
But give coach Kristi Young and her Medina field hockey squad plenty of credit. Despite the adversity, the No. 7 Lady Mustangs hung in against No. 2 Akron and kept the score just 1-0 at halftime. Medina goalie Hallie Seaman made several nice saves with her feet to keep Akron from finding the back of the net, and the Lady Mustang defense stiffened on several Akron penalty corners.
But Medina just couldn't generate enough offense to overcome the consistently stout Akron attack, falling 3-0 in a Class C field hockey quarterfinal game on Tuesday.
Throughout the entire game, Young and her cohorts on the Medina sideline maintained a high level of intensity, shouting instructions at players to ensure they remained in the proper positions. Medina senior captain Mallori Wienke also served as a coach on the field, instructing her teammates to move around at times and coming up with several clears to help improve field position.
The Lady Mustangs didn't beat themselves, and it kept the score from getting out of hand. Akron took the lead seven minutes into the game, and didn't score again until notching two quick goals midway through the second half.
Molly Jennings, Gabrielle Hill and Abigail Stone all scored for the Lady Tigers, as Victoria Triaga earned the shutout in goal.
Akron moves on to play No. 3 Eden in a Class C semifinal game on Thursday evening at the Amherst Turf Field. Start time is slated for 7:30
Barker 6, Roy-Hart 0
BARKER — The No. 1 Lady Raiders took care of business on Tuesday afternoon, jumping out to a 2-0 halftime lead and cruising to a shutout victory of No. 8 Roy-Hart in a Class C field hockey quarterfinal game on Tuesday afternoon.
