MEDINA —

MEDINA — Sometimes in high school sports, where players are usually only around for two or three years at the varsity level, a team is faced with a daunting rebuilding challenge.

That's the case for Medina girls basketball this season. The squad went 9-5 in league last year under coach Ken Haak, but lost the entirety of its starting lineup to graduation. Senior Taylor Miller is the only returning player on the Mustang side, and other than that, it's a contingent of new faces at the varsity level.

It's the reality of the situation, and Haak intends to get his young team up to speed in time to have a successful season in Niagara-Orleans League play.

"Sometimes that's just the way it is in high school sports," said Haak, who played basketball at Lockport HS and is entering his ninth year at the Medina helm. "We just need to regroup. We have a bunch of young kids with a lot of potential, and we're going to work hard every day to try and get better throughout the season."

Medina lost its entire starting lineup in departed seniors Alba Perez, Tenisha Robinson, Kendra Hill, Olivia Hermann and Bailey Ames, in addition to a couple of key bench players, Haak said.

Miller and Briana Dunn are the only two seniors on this year's roster, and they will be joined by a collection of fall volleyball standouts in juniors Brittany Button, Nicole Blount and Emma Ambrose, along with freshman Emily Kams. Blount will serve as basketball captain this season.

The lineup is rounded out by sophomores De'Andrea Salone and Cassie Sargent, as well as freshmen Rowan Hamner, Madeline Winters and Molley Gross.

Haak said he hopes for this year's squad to take on a hard-nosed mentality, playing together as a team and making things difficult for the opposition each and every night.

"We're going to try to be as fundamentally sound as possible," Haak said. "We need to play together as a unit, and we want to play intense defense."

The Mustangs are currently working their way through a short non-league schedule before opening N-O play next Friday, in a home contest against CSAT.
