Starpoint, Tonawanda prep for sectionals

Though the Tonawanda and Starpoint track and field teams didn't do particularly well in the ECIC Track and Field Championships Saturday at Depew High School, some individual athletes did use the meet as an opportunity to prepare or qualify for next week's sectional meet.

Tonawanda coach Dave Nedell said the ECIC meet isn't the best place to judge the success of the programs.

"In a lot of ways, this meet is tougher than sectionals," he said. "Next week, we'll be separated into Division I and Division II based on size, but here we're all together.

"We'll compete, though. That's been the theme all year — just show up and compete."

Some athletes did finish well, though, particularly from Starpoint.

Senior Bernice Dumbleton won the girls' discus handily with a season-high throw of 172 feet, three inches.

Junior pole vaulter Thomas Moran finished second, setting a personal record by clearing 13 feet. He'll compete in sectionals for the second straight year and states for the first time after missing last year's meet with an injury.

"It'll be nice to go their and compete," he said. "I've still got to work on getting my speed up to help me get to the top of my jump."

Starpoint's distance runners did well. Sophomore Livia Chase finished second in the 3,000-meter run and senior Courtney Laderer finished second in the 1,500.

Junior A.J. Joslin took second in the boys' 800 and 1,600 and said he's looking to do the same in sectionals.

"I'd like to win sectionals," Joslin said. "I'm looking forward to competing against some of the same guys I ran with today, but I think I can beat them.

"I'm not sure about states, though. I think I can do well, but I'm not sure what to expect."

Tonawanda sophomore Annie Draves placed fourth in the girls' pentathlon, finishing with a score of 2,092 and qualifying for sectionals.

Nedell said he's got eight or nine athletes that will compete next week in the Section VI Track and Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Lewiston-Porter High School.
