All-N-O field hockey team announced

LOCKPORT —

The Niagara-Orleans League all-league field hockey team was announced this week. League champion Barker led the way with three first-team selections, while Kenmore and Akron were allotted two selections. All other N-O schools had one player earn first-team honors.

Barker was led by first-team selections Olivia Denny, Heather Mason and Melissa Grosshans. Kenmore's first-team selections were Kaeli and Brianna Mathias, while Akron's were Claudia and Abigail Stone.

The first team was rounded out by Mallori Wienke (Medina), Casidhe Heschke (Roy-Hart), Michelle Myers (Wilson) and Morgan Bedford (Newfane).

Barker's three second-team selections were Brooke Bodine, Morgan Brown and Alexandra VeRost. They were joined by Lindsey Palame and Adrianna King of Kenmore, along with Gabrielle Hill and Dakota Earle of Akron. Earle also earned the league sportsmanship award.

The second team was rounded out by Kelsey Evoy (Medina), Cassandra Carr (Wilson), Leah Good (Newfane) and Rielly Albee (Roy-Hart).

Honorable mentions were Kelsey Blackley, Gabby Clare, Madison Greenwald, Erika Moeller and Caitlyn Mason (Barker), Stella Russo and Lindsey Hill (Medina), Deanna Catalano, Angelina Ciarfella, Shelby Smith and Kelsey Eldridge (Roy-Hart), Loriann Blenker and Bailey Clouse (Akron), Marisa Walck, Rachael Cobo and Courtney Wheeler (Wilson), Katie Kneeland, Leah Burns and Samantha Summers (Newfane), and MacKenzie Hadaway, Lindsay Andrews and Sam Dellapenta (Kenmore).

Akron's Claudia Stone led the league in scoring with 20 goals. Kenmore's Kaeli Mathias was second with 18, and Wilson's Michelle Myers was third with 11.

Here are biographies of Barker's three first-team All-League players, courtesy of Barker coach Jeff Costello:

Olivia Denny, Senior Attack
Olivia plans to continue her field hockey career next fall at University of Rochester, where she will major in biochemistry to pursue a career in pharmacy. She has played field hockey for six years and was a member of the Barker teams that reached the state semifinals in 2010 and 2012 (along with Mason and Grosshans). In 10th grade, she received the team's unsung hero award for offense, and as a junior she was team MVP, first-team All-Western New York and a member of the all-state team. This season, Olivia scored three goals and led the team in assists with four. She is a multi-faceted player that rarely leaves the field and quietly motivates her teammates to be better every day. She leads by example, is the hardest-working player in practice and has been a member of the Scholar-Athlete Team for five years. She also plays basketball and softball, but is a field hockey player year-round.
