The Medina football team started and ended the 2013 season strong — jumping out to a 3-0 start behind a blazing offensive attack, defeating Albion in an intense rivalry matchup to earn a sectional playoff berth, and closing strong with a well-rounded domination of Wilson to complete a winning season at 5-4 overall.

It was a solid campaign for coach Eric Valley’s squad, and the rest of the league appreciated it. A collection of Mustangs was recognized last week for their efforts throughout the season, as Medina produced three first-team all-league players, two second-teamers and three honorable mention selections.

The first-teamers were Jason Hellwig as quarterback, Kyle Barna as a linebacker, and Munjie Brown as defensive back. Hellwig was a steady presence as the offense’s pilot all season long, while the versatile Barna and Brown provided impact plays on both sides of the ball.

Hellwig finished the season 83-of-153 passing for 1,158 yards, with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Barna finished with 51 tackles, nine for a loss, along with four sacks, five passes defended and three forced fumbles. Brown had 57 tackles, six for a loss and three forced fumbles.

Barna added 587 yards rushing on 83 carries, with 10 touchdowns, while Brown ran for 769 yards on 108 carries with seven TDs. Barna added 32 receptions for 523 yards and three TDs, while Brown caught 13 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Second-team selections were Dylan Lewis as wide receiver and Charles Beach for his work along the defensive line.

Lewis emerged this season as a true deep threat with 17 catches for 312 yards and five touchdowns. Beach added 57 tackles, three sacks, a pick and a fumble recovery.

Honorable mention recognition went to Brett Pecoraro, Ty Hrovat and Brandon Schoolcraft.

Pecoraro had 42 tackles, three for a loss, with an interception and a fumble recovery, while adding two touchdowns as a running back. Hrovat caught eight passes for 84 yards and a score, along with 28 tackles, two interceptions and six passes defended as a cornerback. Schoolcraft added 56 tackles.
