Medina swimming splits season opener as dual-coach era begins

HS SWIMMING: Albion swept; Barker and Roy-Hart score victories

In Monday evening’s season-opening meet at Alexander, the Medina swimming sideline consisted of two head coaches. After 12 years of Mary Dooley leading both the boys and girls squads, Aaron Moessinger made his debut as head boys swim coach, while Dooley remained as leader of the girls team.

With this arrangement, Dooley was able to focus her attention on coaching up her girls throughout the evening, while Moessinger focused on instructing the boys in technique, pacing and so forth.

The girls opened strong with an easy 71-23 victory over Alexander, while the boys fell to a tough Trojan squad — which captured the Genesee Region League title last season — by a 76-25 margin. The meet marked the first of a series of non-league crossover meets between the Niagara-Orleans and G-R leagues, which serve to warm swimmers up for league play later in the year.

Sophomore Emma Gardner led the Medina girls with victories in the 200 freestyle (2:24.95) and 100 butterfly (1:14.76) races, while senior Emilee Austin emerged victorious in the 50 freestyle (29.66) and 500 freestyle (7:15.81). Max Wright won the 100 freestyle (1:06.99), while Haylee Cogovan took the 100 breaststroke (1:23.94) and Krista Nellist took the 100 backstroke (1:15.18).

Dooley said after the meet that it was strange not to be in charge of the boys team, but that she obviously still roots just as hard for them — and that the arrangement should immediately improve the overall quality of the Seahorse program.

“I miss the boys already,” Dooley said in jest. “But we’re all the same team, really, and having two coaches will give our swimmers more coaching and individual coaching. It should help our program right away.”

For the boys, Medina junior Austin Brown won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:39.58. The team of Brown, sophomore Chase Pecoraro, junior Derek Donley and junior Austin Heil also performed admirably in the 200 freestyle relay, taking second place with a time of 1:46.79.
