Medina boys basketball rolls past Oakfield in season opener

HS ROUNDUP: Lyndonville boys BB falls to Attica

MEDINA — After a 2012-13 season marked by an inability to fully come together as a unit on the court, the Medina boys basketball team wanted to demonstrate effective chemistry from the get-go this winter season.
Mission accomplished on Wednesday night. The Mustangs jumped out to a 46-13 halftime lead over Oakfield-Alabama and never looked back. Medina saw 11 players find the bottom of the net, and coach Tom Forrestel's squad cruised to a stress-free season-opening victory over Oakfield-Alabama, by a 71-43 margin.
"It was nice to see," Forrestel said. "I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this new group, but we executed our game plan very well. We built a nice lead with our defensive intensity, and we kept the tempo up. Our defensive pressure was very solid."
Multi-sport impact senior Munjie Brown had 16 points to share the scoring lead with sophomore Dylan Lewis, with the two combining to shoot five three-point baskets on the night. Senior Ben McPherson added nine points, while senior Kevin Arnold had eight, with junior point guard Jason Hellwig adding seven.
Senior Adam Hoot added four points, returning to the hardwood after leading the Medina soccer team to the Class B-1 title as starting goalkeeper.
Medina used a 28-4 advantage in the second quarter to pull away, after opening up an 18-9 edge at the end of the first. Oakfield-Alabama slowly cut into the margin as the second half moved along, but it was much too late. The damage had been done.
Medina moves on to face Burgard in a road contest this evening. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m., at the Burgard HS gym in the city of Buffalo.

Attica 50, Lyndonville 33
LYNDONVILLE — Attica jumped out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter, and cruised from there to a 17-point victory over Lyndonville in a Genesee Region League contest on Wednesday evening.
