Albion wrestling coach Keith Piccirilli earns 300th win

HS ROUNDUP: Roy-Hart swimming continues to collect wins

DEPEW —

DEPEW — Keith Piccirilli has been around for a long time as Albion wrestling coach. 32 seasons worth of time.

Piccirilli added another milestone to his illustrious career on Saturday afternoon, surpassing 300 career victories as the Purple Eagles went 3-2 at the Depew Tournament. Albion tied for third place in the six-team tournament, as Williamsville East earned the title and Starpoint placed second.

"It's nice to get that out of the way," Piccirilli said of earning his 300th victory (with the three wins on Saturday, he is now at 301). "The tournament was a good test; we had a couple kids who had some tough matches, and it will help us in the long run."

A large contingent of Albion wrestlers went 4-1 on the afternoon, helping set the Purple Eagles up for success in the contest that also included teams from Williamsville North, West Seneca East and Depew. The four-win group included Blake Aina (132 pounds), Aaron Burnside (138), Justyn Haines (160), Ed Wolfe (170), Aaron Mulroy (182), Kollin Reynolds (195), and Dylan Burkhardt (220).

Albion defeated Depew (70-6), Williamsville North (51-30) and West Seneca East (48-39). The Purple Eagles fell to Starpoint by a 55-27 margin, and to Williamsville East by a 50-27 score.

Albion will open its Niagara-Orleans League schedule on Wednesday evening, in a home contest against Akron. The Purple Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season, after defeating Kendall in a non-league contest earlier in the week.

All things considered, Piccirilli was content with his team's effort on Saturday. Coupled with reaching the 300-win milestone, it made for a nice afternoon.

"It's about where I expected us to be," Piccirilli said.
